If you are looking into solar and thinking it might not work because there is a tree shading your roof, you might have another option.

Detached garages, attached garages, or workshops could be a great fit, especially if they have a roof that gets sun.

Sometimes a garage is a better choice than the main house.

One of our clients in Calgary added a heat pump to their home earlier this year, and realized the electricity load was going to be more than they were planning for.

A quick overview of what Newo Global Energy actually does, since most people find us through solar but our work goes wider than that.

1. Solar installs. Residential, rural, and commercial systems across central Alberta. Nathan leads our solar division and has been with us since 2021.

2. Training programs. Hands-on solar and energy-efficiency training for Indigenous youth and people facing barriers to employment.

Trainees learn the work, get experience on real installs, and have moved into paid employment in the industry.

3. Community education. Energy efficiency tips and presentations, delivered within the cultural context of each community we visit. The 2019 Métis Nation of Alberta tour took us to 18 communities across the province.

This is the Alberta-specific club that can shorten your solar payback by 3 to 4 years.

It's called the Solar Club, and it's a program designed specifically for Alberta solar owners.

Once your system is installed and registered as a micro-generator, you can join.

Here's how it works.

You switch between two electricity rates depending on the season:
Summer (high production months): Switch to the high rate, around 35¢/kWh. Every kilowatt your panels send back to the grid earns you a premium.

Winter (lower production months): Switch to the low rate, around 8.4¢/kWh. Your import costs stay as low as possible.

Most members switch in March/April and back in October/November. Auto-switching is available so you don't have to track it manually.

Members also earn 3% cash back on imported electricity each year, with an extra 2% for EV owners.

For homes producing 70% or more of their annual electricity from solar, this combination can shorten the typical 8-12 year payback period by 3 to 4 years.

Most of what we do runs through partnerships.

We're a small Indigenous-led non-profit, and the truth is that we don't have the capacity, the relationships, or the reach to do this work of sharing abundance alone. But, we've never tried to.

Our training programs are co-designed with community organizations who know what their members actually need.

We don't show up with a generic curriculum and ask people to fit themselves to it.

We listen first, then build something that fits the community. Our solar installs are completed alongside trainees, supervisors, and partner crews.

We've worked with Iron and Earth, Relay Education, Yellowhead Tribal Council Development Foundation, Bissell Centre, iHuman Youth Society, Métis Nation of Alberta, and many others.

Each of these organizations is doing something specific in their corner of the world, and we get to be one part of that.

For example, a few summers ago, we ran a short solar training program with the iHuman Youth Society in Edmonton. Some of the trainees went on to work on the iHuman’s install.

That win wasn't ours. It belonged to iHuman, who has helped hundreds of young people in Edmonton beat odds that were stacked against them from the start.

We were one small part of a longer story they've been telling for decades.

A lot of homeowners we work with have recently installed a heat pump first.

Heat pumps run cleaner than gas furnaces, they handle Alberta winters fine, and they're going to keep getting more common.

The catch is that your gas bill drops, but your electricity bill goes up.

So you didn't save money. You moved where the money goes.

Solar is the move that closes the loop. The heat pump is pulling more electricity, but your solar system is producing it. So you go from paying the utility to paying yourself.
