I love this article. I also value and teach mindfulness and energy awareness. I appreciate how Taffy Brodesser-Akner frames up the magic that occurs in our minds and the value of being in action, creating what we love from the gifts of ideas surfing in our brains.
As I've mentioned in my random wisdom newsletter (sign up link below or head to www.elainebroe.com), I'm working on becoming more aware of habits that don't support me and practicing more of what I coach. I work with a lot of successful (or soon to be successful) entrepreneurs who juggle multiple lives and projects and they are tired. Exhausted. Taffy speaks of "half-assing it" which isn't a bad thing. With some clients we work on identifying what needs to be the A Game and where is it ok to bring our B game, or even our C game? What's going to bring us the outcome we most want?
New clients generally get my A game. My lawn maintenance at home may have recently reached D game level (ask my neighbours). My friends who love me and have a sense of my wild calendar understand when the B game rolls in, and when they need me in a pinch - A+ Elaine is there. She may not be showered, but she's there with wine and whatever else is needed.
I've also just completed Enneagram Certification and learned a lot about my preference Type 7 - enthusiastic visionary, big ideas, a love of options and newness, diverse challenges and creating. Yes, the dark sides of being scattered and stressed can surface, but damn I love the brilliance of treating life like an adventure. My adventure.
"Sometimes, if a moment is great, I will stay in it. At other times, I will plan for better moments. I insist on the point of view that I’m not broken. That the thoughts are there to tell me how to live my life. That I can’t tame them. That I can’t be tamed."
Might be time to revisit how I judge my wily, beautiful brain and way of being in the world. Maybe the mornings can be mindfulness meditation, a dance off to Prince or tackling 40 emails to reach inbox freedom for 3 sweet minutes.
If you step away from the current life trend recommendations, what lifestyle do you want? Which one aligns with your values? Figuring out how to live is a daily adventure for us all.
Everyone wants women to be mindful, calm, and deliberate. But, as Taffy Brodesser-Akner writes, sometimes a little chaos gets things done.
