A little Friday throwback…

We came across this old aerial photo of the Station, taken on what certainly looks like a busy sale day!

It’s interesting to look closely and see just how much has changed over the years. Even the layout of the pens looks quite different from what we know today.

There are a lot of cattle, consignors, buyers and memories wrapped up in the history of this place.

The Station Through the Years

Some of the best stories aren't told. They're discovered.

This week as we looked through old binders, handwritten notes, photographs, and decades of Station records, we were reminded of just how much has changed.

For more than six decades, the Douglas Bull & Female Development Center has been part of the stories of countless breeders across Canada.

These old weigh reports, photographs, and records offer a glimpse into how the Station has documented the progress of cattle and supported breeders through the years.

Sale days have evolved. Technology has advanced. Facilities have changed.

Yet the purpose has remained remarkably consistent.

To provide meaningful performance information, create marketing opportunities for breeders, and bring people together around a shared passion for quality cattle.

Some things have changed.

Behind the Station | Coming Full Circle

Every Journey has a beginning.

For JK Angus , Jeremy and Kerry Pilkey, it began with the purchase of their first purebred Angus heifer from Harry Blankvoort of Newzalk Farm Ltd. through the Douglas Bull & Female Development Center.

As young producers with a small purebred herd, they later became consignors themselves, using the Station to compare their cattle alongside others of the same breed, collect valuable performance data, and establish the client base that would help grow their breeding program.

Looking back today, Jeremy reflects that without the Station, getting their name established would have been much more difficult.

That first heifer became the foundation for something much bigger.

It grew into years of consigning, lasting relationships, and an ongoing commitment to supporting the Development Center.

“As long as we have purebred cattle, we’ll support the Development Center.”

Today, Jeremy continues that commitment as President of the Douglas Bull & Female Development Center.

When asked what he’s most proud of, his answer wasn’t the cattle or the facilities.

It was the people.

“Everyone involved with the Station since I’ve been there has played a huge role and are great people through and through.”

Behind every longtime consignor was once a first-time entry.

Over the past several weeks, we've shared stories from longtime consignors, new voices, and the next generation of breeders. Every story has been different, but they all started with a first entry.

Today, we're excited to announce that entry forms are now available for the 63rd Development Year at the Douglas Bull & Female Development Center.

The Douglas Bull & Female Development Center is seeking its next Development Center Manager(s).

For more than 60 years, the Douglas Bull & Female Development Center has provided trusted performance evaluation and marketing opportunities for seedstock producers from across Canada. As we look ahead to the future, we are seeking an individual or couple to help build on this legacy and shape the future of our organization.

The Opportunity
• Oversee the care, health, and development of cattle throughout the test season.
• Manage the day-to-day operation of the facility and maintain accurate performance and health records.
• Build strong relationships with consignors, industry partners, and the Board of Directors.
• Coordinate the many moving pieces that contribute to a successful annual bull and female sale.
• Assist with administration, communications, and promotion of the Development Center.

Some things never lose their magic.

Watching spray planes has been one of my favourite sights since I was a kid. I still remember sitting along the dirt road near our farm, watching them land, reload, and head back out to the fields. I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Seeing them flying over the fields beside the Station today brought all those memories rushing back.

It’s also a reminder of the incredible work happening across our farming communities. With such a wet season, every opportunity to get into the fields counts, and for many, the view from above is playing an important role this year.

Legacy Spotlight | Built Over Time

Legacies aren't built by standing still.
They're built by growing, adapting, and continuing to believe in something over time.
When Jack Hansen of Otter Creek Farm first consigned to the Station in the mid-1980s, performance was the primary focus. Over the years, he has watched the program evolve alongside the beef industry.

Today, he values the opportunity for breeders to develop more balanced breeding programs using the wealth of performance and genetic information now available, while still giving buyers the opportunity to compare cattle from various breeds, all raised under the same management.

For Jack, the Station has always been more than a place to market cattle.
It's a place to learn, compare, improve, and grow alongside fellow breeders.
He believes the Douglas Bull & Female Development Center offers an especially valuable opportunity for smaller breeders and those just getting started, providing a place to market their cattle while continuing to learn.

After nearly four decades of consigning, his perspective is simple:
"It's been a very rewarding experience to be involved with the Center all these years."

Broken C Simmentals knows that building a herd takes thoughtful decisions, hard work, and making the most of every opportunity.

We're excited to feature them in our first **Next Gen Spotlight**, a series highlighting the next generation of producers and their experiences with the Douglas Bull & Female Development Center.

When asked what made them decide to consign at the Station, their answer was simple:

"For us it was quite simple, it comes down to economics."

By consigning alongside other breeders, they found an efficient way to develop their bulls while reaching their full potential without having to do it all on their own.

One of the biggest takeaways has been the opportunity to reach a much broader market.

"We've had calls from all across Canada and into the U.S. You never know who is interested in what you have."
