Spring cleanup season is here, and the Beckwith Township Fire Department is reminding residents to put fire safety first before starting any open-air burning.

A FREE burn permit is required before burning brush, yard debris, or having certain outdoor fires. Residents can apply online at https://beckwith.burnpermits.com

Before lighting any fire, please review Beckwith Township’s Open Air Burning By-law and permit requirements here: https://beckwith.civicweb.net/document/4740/

Important reminders:
• No burning is permitted on Township property, including parks, trails, road allowances, and public spaces
• Never burn near utility lines, poles, or equipment
• Only approved materials may be burned
• A responsible adult must remain with the fire at all times until it is fully extinguished
• Keep proper extinguishing tools nearby at all times

Campfire safety:
• Maximum size: 2 ft wide and 3.25 ft high
• At least 10 ft of clear space around the fire
• At least 16 ft of clear space overhead
• Must be contained in a fire pit, rocks, or other approved enclosure
• No fires during winds over 20 km/h
• Must be at least 25 ft from neighboring property lines

Burn barrels and chimeneas:
• Must follow campfire rules
• Burn barrels must have a mesh lid to prevent sparks and embers from escaping

Large open-air fires:
• Require at least 50 ft of clear space in all directions
• Cannot be lit before daylight or after sunset
• No material may be added after sunset
• No burning during winds over 15 km/h

Burning can quickly become dangerous if not done properly. Please take the time to burn safely and responsibly to help protect your home, your neighbours, and our community.

🏠🔥 Holiday Home Fire Escape Planning 🔥🏠

The holidays are a time for gathering with family and friends—but with extra people in your home, it’s especially important to be prepared in case of a fire.

Take a few minutes to develop and review your home fire escape plan with everyone in the house, including visiting family members and guests. Make sure everyone knows two ways out of every room, if possible, and identify who will help young children, older adults, or anyone who may need assistance.

Choose a safe meeting place outside—such as a tree or lamp post—where everyone can gather so you know who is out safely. If smoke is present, remember to get low and go under the smoke to the nearest safe exit.

Once outside, call 9-1-1 only after you’ve exited the home. Most importantly, once out, stay out—never re-enter a burning building.

Fire escape plans should be reviewed and updated annually, especially during the holidays when routines and household occupancy change.

A few minutes of planning today can save lives tomorrow. Stay safe this holiday season.

In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. There are several things you can ...

Holiday safety starts with having a HOME FIRE ESCAPE PLAN.
Fire doesn’t wait - and neither should we.
Every year, too many Ontario families face house fires with no escape plan. In those frantic moments, every second counts. The danger is real, but preventable.
Communities across Ontario are making escape planning a household priority. A home fire escape plan is simple - and can mean the difference between life and death.

Identify two exits from every room.
Determine who will be responsible for helping young children, older adults or anyone else that may need assistance.
Choose a safe meeting spot outside, like a tree or lamp post across the street.
Once out, stay out.
Call 9-1-1 from outside of the home.
Practice the plan with everyone in your household at least twice a year. Practice at night and during the daytime.
Review your plan every year.

When the smoke alarm sounds, there’s no time to plan - only time to act.
Protect your loved ones. Protect your home. Let’s keep Ontario safe - together.
From every community across the province, let’s make this a fire-safe holiday season.

Holiday safety starts with SAFE FAMILIES IN THE KITCHEN.
Little hands (or paws!) and holiday heat don’t belong together - keep kids safe while you cook.
That’s why communities across Ontario are empowering adults to protect little ones.

Show kids how to stay one metre (three feet) away from stoves and ovens.
Explain why hot surfaces can cause burns.
Assign safe tasks like mixing or decorating. Supervise kids in the kitchen closely.
Turn pot handles inward when pots are on the stove so they can not be easily knocked or pulled off the stove.
Make sure electrical cords are not dangling from countertops, where they could be pulled by small children or pets.
Cool a burn by running cool water over the wound for 3 to 5 minutes. If the burn is severe, seek medical attention.

The holidays should leave warm memories - not lasting injuries.
Protect your loved ones. Protect your home. Let’s keep Ontario safe - together.
From every community across the province, let’s make this a fire-safe holiday season.

🎄🔥 12 Days of Holiday Fire Safety – Day 6 (2025) 🔥🎄
Extension Cord Safety

Holiday lights and decorations add warmth and cheer—but extension cords need to be used safely to prevent fires and injuries.

🔌 Extension cords are for temporary use only, not permanent solutions
🏠 If you need more outlets, have a licensed electrician install them
➰ Never link extension cords together—use one that’s the proper length
⚡ Don’t overload circuits, and never run cords under rugs or across doorways
👀 Inspect cords before use and discard any that are frayed, cracked, or damaged

A little planning goes a long way in keeping your home safe this holiday season.
Celebrate safely and help us spread the message! 🎁✨

Holiday safety starts with proper use of EXTENSION CORDS.
Holiday decorations often come with extra plugs – which can mean extra danger.
That’s why communities across Ontario are promoting safe power practices.

Look for approved extension cords with certification marks like CSA, ULC, or ETL and rated for indoor or outdoor use.
Extension cords should not be linked together - instead, use an extension cord that is long enough to do the job.
Don’t overload a circuit, and never run cords under rugs or across doorways where they can be damaged or cause tripping.
Inspect cords for damage before use, and discard if frayed.
Unplug decorations when you leave.

Holiday lights shine brightest when safety comes first.
Protect your loved ones. Protect your home. Let’s keep Ontario safe - together.
From every community across the province, let’s make this a fire-safe holiday season.

12/16/2025

Holiday safety starts with CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS.
You can’t see it. You can’t smell it. But you can protect your loved ones from it with a working carbon monoxide alarm.
That’s why communities across Ontario are making carbon monoxide safety a household standard.

Install carbon monoxide alarms outside all sleeping areas and starting January 1st, Ontario Fire Code changes will require you to also install them on every storey of your home. Learn more at Ontario.ca/CarbonMonoxide.
Test them monthly by pressing the test button and change batteries annually.
Evacuate immediately if the alarm sounds and call 9-1-1 from outside the building.
Replace carbon monoxide alarms every 10 years or according to manufacturer’s instructions.
A working carbon monoxide alarm is the simplest gift you can give your family this season.
Protect your loved ones. Protect your home. Let’s keep Ontario safe - together.
From every community across the province, let’s make this a fire-safe holiday season.

🎄 Holiday Fire Safety Tip: Water Your Christmas Tree! 🔥💧

A fresh, well-watered Christmas tree is not only beautiful — it’s safer for your home and family. A dry tree can become a serious fire hazard in seconds. That’s why proper tree care is so important throughout the holiday season.

✔️ Buy a fresh tree and always keep the base of the trunk in water
✔️ Use a sturdy tree stand that holds enough water for daily hydration
✔️ Water your tree every single day to keep it from drying out
✔️ Falling needles are a warning sign — dry trees burn fast
✔️ Never place lit candles on or near your Christmas tree
✔️ Keep your tree away from heat sources like furnace vents, radiators, space heaters, and non-LED lights

🌟 A little water goes a long way in preventing holiday fires.
Protect your loved ones. Protect your home. Let’s keep this holiday season fire-safe — together.
