Species Spotlight | Texas Horned Lizard 🦎
Meet the Texas horned lizard—an iconic reptile known for its flat body, spiny scales, and distinctive horned head. Built for survival, its unique shape helps it blend seamlessly into dry, sandy environments.
Found in open habitats with loose soils, these lizards depend on the ground for burrowing, nesting, and hibernation. Their range spans much of Texas and extends into parts of the south-central U.S. and northern Mexico.
Today, the Texas horned lizard is listed as a threatened species in Texas, making conservation efforts more important than ever. By equipping researchers with reliable transmitters, we help support the tracking and monitoring needed to better understand and protect this unique species.
Follow along for more “Species Spotlights” where we highlight different species, their behaviours, and the research helping protect them! 🙌
