🌿 BLCMP COMMUNITY FIELD SESSIONS ARE BACK! 🌿

Our first BLCMP Community Field Session took place back in May 2026, and we’re excited to continue our field sessions this fall! 🍂

We still have Sessions 2, 3, 4 & 5 coming up in September, with opportunities to learn more about the environmental studies happening throughout Buffalo Lake Métis Settlement, connect with technical experts and the BLMS Consultation Team, and share your knowledge and insights with us.

⚠️ A few important things to keep in mind:
• These sessions will involve travelling by quad or side-by-side into remote locations within the Settlement. Please only sign up if you are physically able and comfortable with this type of travel. (We will be assessing the sites and conditions closer to each session date, so the mode of transportation may change depending on site accessibility and conditions.)
• Fall weather can change quickly! Please dress appropriately and consider wearing layers so you can adjust to changing temperatures.
• We recommend bringing a bag with snacks and drinks, just in case, as we will be spending time in remote areas.
• Lunch will be provided.
• If you have your own quad or side-by-side and would like to bring it, please let us know when signing up!

Cyanobacteria (Blue-Green Algae) Monitoring Update – Buffalo Lake 💧

The Buffalo Lake Métis Settlement Consultation Office has been continuing our cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) water sampling throughout the 2026 season to help monitor the health of Buffalo Lake and keep our community informed.

We would like to let our community members know that Alberta Health Services has issued a Blue-Green Algae (Cyanobacteria) Advisory for Buffalo Lake.

⚠️ What does this mean?

This advisory is primarily for the safety of those using the recreational areas around the lake, as well as the safety of pets and other animals. It is simply a reminder to be aware that blue-green algae may be present and to take the recommended precautions while enjoying the lake.

The advisory reminds our members to:

💧 Never drink or cook with UNTREATED water directly from any recreational body of water, including Buffalo Lake.

🐟 Fish are still safe to eat. Alberta Health Services advises not to eat whole fish or fish trimmings, as toxins can accumulate in the liver and other organs. Fish fillets are considered safe to eat.

Additional precautions include:
• Avoid swimming or wading where blue-green algae is visible.
• Keep pets away from affected areas and prevent them from drinking lake water.
• Avoid contact with algae that has washed up along the shoreline.

Weather and wind can cause algae blooms to move throughout the lake, so conditions may change from one area to another.

Our office will continue monitoring Buffalo Lake and sharing updates with our community as they become available.

Environmental Monitoring Basics Training

Two training spots are available for Buffalo Lake Metis Settlement (BLMS) members seeking an environmental career. Kikino Metis Settlement will host the session.

Must be a BLMS member
Must be at least 18 years old
Must provide own transportation for all 3 weeks

Employment: Training does not guarantee a job with Buffalo Lake Consultation
Selection: Not based on first-come, first-served applications
