Towns like ours don't happen by accident.

They're built over generations by people who stayed, who invested, who raised their kids here and watched those kids raise theirs. That's not nothing. That's something worth protecting.

BC's forest sector is at a crossroads right now. The pressures are real — global competition, rising costs, policy complexity that makes it harder every year to keep mills running and workers employed across this province.

The BC Council of Forest Industries — COFI — has launched a campaign called Forestry is a Solution. It's asking the provincial government to take meaningful action to support the sector and the hundreds of communities across BC that are woven into it.

The campaign has a petition at forestryisasolution.com. When you sign, it sends a letter directly to your MLA, the Minister of Forests, and the Premier. It's a small thing that adds up to something larger when a whole community does it together.

April 8, forestry leaders from across BC gather in Vancouver for the COFI Convention. We'd love them to walk in knowing that communities like ours are paying attention.

To our neighbours in Trail and the surrounding area:

We want to address the sulphur odour that many of you noticed early this morning and apologize for the disruption it caused.

Here is what happened. We shut the mill down on February 28 to fix a broken pipe. When we restarted on the evening of March 1, gases vented during the process that contain sulphur compounds, which produce that distinctive rotten egg smell. Our air quality monitors picked up elevated levels, so our team went out to investigate and found a second issue: a leaking pump seal releasing additional sulphur gases. We shut the mill back down immediately to make the repairs.

Between 2am and 4am, sulphur levels at two community monitoring stations briefly exceeded our permitted limits. We have reported this to the Ministry of Environment, as required. That data will be publicly available through the province's air quality monitoring network.

The smell is unpleasant, and we understand why it raises concern. We want you to know our team responded quickly, repairs have been completed, and we take our responsibility to this community seriously.
