People who travel by air for non-essential reasons, such as vacation, will face new measures and expenses when they return to Canada.

Travellers must still provide proof of a negative COVID-19 molecular test taken within 72 hours before their scheduled departure time. In the near future, travellers will also be required to:

take a COVID-19 molecular test on arrival in Canada
stay in a hotel for 3 nights while they await the results of the COVID-19 molecular test they received on arrival
pay for their hotel, as well as all associated costs for food, cleaning and security

Only the candidates from the Canadian Experience Class were eligible for this round of invitations.

The minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score in this latest invitation round was 454, a decrease of 7 points over the previous all-program draw held on January 7, 2021.

January 8, 2021—Ottawa—International students bring so much to Canada, contributing over $21 billion annually to our economy and supporting the vitality of our communities. Yet the pandemic has presented myriad challenges for international students. Most notably, for many holders of a post-graduation work permit (PGWP), the pandemic’s disruption and uncertainty have jeopardized their chances of obtaining the work experience they need to apply for permanent residence.

As part of the Government of Canada’s efforts to support international students through this challenging time, the Honourable Marco E. L. Mendicino, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, today announced that former international students who hold or held a PGWP will have the opportunity to apply for an open work permit.

Foreign nationals in Canada affected by the pandemic with an expired or expiring PGWP will have a unique chance to apply for another open work permit. These will be valid for 18 months and allow former international students to remain in Canada, continue to seek employment and build their future in this country.

The Honourable Marco E. L. Mendicino (Marco Mendicino) , Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and His Excellency Luigi Di Maio (Luigi Di Maio), Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic, today signed a new bilateral youth mobility agreement between Canada and Italy.

This new agreement will improve labour market access for Canadian and Italian
youth between 18 and 35 years old by allowing them to work and travel for 12
months; candidates can participate twice for a total of 24 months.

Youth will also be able to gain professional work experience with the addition of 2 streams: International Co-op and Young Professionals.

This is good news for clients of Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada, as they will now be able to book their own biometrics appointments online.

Since mid-September, Service Canada officers have been calling clients to schedule biometrics appointments. But as of November 30, clients who have not been contacted should use the online scheduling tool to schedule their own appointment, as stated in their biometrics instruction letter.

Clients should choose the closest Service Canada office to them for their appointment. Only clients with appointments will be able to use the service, as walk-in service is not available.

Permanent residence applicants who have not enrolled their biometrics within the past 10 years will require an appointment to fulfill the biometric requirement of their application.

Public policies exempting temporary residence applicants in Canada, and permanent residence applicants who have enrolled their biometrics in the last 10 years, continue to be in effect.

Health and safety protocols are in place in Service Canada Centres, and clients need to follow all applicable public health guidelines.
