What makes our portable power packs pro-grade?

We don't use the word 'pro' lightly. This isn't a marketing tactic or fluffy adjective we use to describe our products, it's a core part of our design ethos. Our products are designed, built and tested to withstand the biggest of jobs and toughest of conditions.

It comes down to 5 key things:

❄️ WEATHERPROOF: Our Batt Packs are designed in Canada to withstand even the harshest of Canadian winters. With an IP44 rating, they are both dust and water resistant and they also come equipped with our proprietary POLARSHIELD technology, meaning you can operate them in temperatures as low as -30°C (or -22°F).

👊 DURABILITY: These bad boys are designed for daily, contractor level use. They are not your typical 'just in case' power packs (though they make a great backup too), they are meant to be used and abused. Originally built and tested in the mining sector, our Batt Packs are designed to resist both shock and vibration.

🛡️ QUALITY: We are proud to make our Batt Packs right here in Canada with predominantly North American sourced components. We are not the cheapest power pack on the block, but we're not trying to be. Quality and reliability are our top priorities, and using only the best components and parts comes at a price.

✅ RELIABILITY: We believe in building products that last. Our Batt Packs are designed to last an entire work shift and can power some pretty heavy duty equipment. Even if you used them every single day of the year, they would still maintain 80% of their battery capacity after 9+ years.

⚙️ VERSATILITY: If you're a technician or contractor, you know that you're only as good as your fuel tank. We wanted to make it as easy as possible to recharge your Batt Pack, which is why there are three different ways to charge - you can charge using solar panels, off your car or via a regular wall outlet.

Curious about what our Batt Packs can power or want to find out how to get your hands on one? Drop us a comment or send us a message.

When you're on the front lines, access to power can mean the difference between life and death. Whether it's recharging vital communications gear, powering lighting and medical equipment or charging drones for recon missions, reliable power is an essential resource and one we are proud to provide.

In early December, we were contacted by the Department of National Defense about sending our made-in-Canada Batt Packs to Ukraine. We immediately wanted to help but it wasn't that simple. Our Batt Packs have always been made-to-order and we didn't have any in stock on hand to send. After a bit of back and forth, they confirmed there was a flight scheduled to send supplies on January 3rd - so they'd take whatever we could produce by then. The only caveat - they needed something more stealth than our branded yellow cases...well game on, we could make that happen.

We spoke to our customers who had orders in the queue to find out if they would be open to waiting a few more weeks so we could squeeze in the Ukraine order into production. We reviewed our inventory and determined that with the help of our trusted network of suppliers, we could make timing work. As for that yellow issue, our incredible partners at Nanuk were able to rush over a shipment of Canadian made, army green cases just in time.

We visited the local Ukrainian federation to let them know what we were up to and asked for their help in writing a special message to include on the cases. They were more than happy to help and our creative team was soon running test prints on stickers.

Fast forward a few weeks and countless long hours put in by our assembly and engineering teams - we did it. On January 3, a shipment of 22 custom built, army green Batt Packs was picked up and loaded onto a plane en route to Ukraine.

Despite the exhaustion, we feel incredibly proud of the work we do and privileged to be able to support the Ukraine initiative. Most of all, we have to extend the BIGGEST thank you to our team, our suppliers and our clients - believe us when we say that without you, this wouldn't have been possible.

Want to save money on your energy bills in 2023?

Here are 5 proven ways to cut costs:

🔥 Turn down the heat while you're away at work during the day and while sleeping at night. According to studies, the ideal temperature for sleep is around 18*C (or 65*F). Using a smart thermostat can take the hassle out of constantly fiddling around with the temperature dial.

👚 Ditch the dryer and hang your clothes to dry. Not only will this help you avoid any shrinkage mishaps, but it will also save on energy. Better yet, double down and wash your clothing in cold water.

🪟 Tackle window and door draughts and don't be afraid to get creative. You can use caulking, door sweeps or window films to stop heat from escaping and improve your energy efficiency.

💡 Lighting can be a surprising source of energy usage. Whether you forget to turn the lights off or you're using outdated lightbulbs, this is one area we can all improve on. LED bulbs are the most efficient, using 75% less energy than traditional light bulbs.

☀️ Switch to solar and offset your energy usage either partially or completely. While there is an upfront cost, you can finance it for the same or less than your current energy bills and it will pay for itself over time.

7 years ago today, our founder Francois Byrne incorporated Hybrid Power Solutions and the fuel-free dream was born.

Francois will be the first to tell you, it has been a WILD rollercoaster of a journey so far. At the lowest of lows, there were challenges that felt insurmountable in the moment. Yet somehow, against the odds, we've always made it through. And at the highest of highs, there were wins we never could have even dreamed of.

We may have started as only a desk and a dream in a basement, but things look a little different today. We're getting ready to open our second Canadian production facility, with plans for our first US one just around the corner. And at the center of it all, we are lucky to have an incredible group of people who never give up and are on a mission to power freedom.

So what's next? We've got some big things up our sleeve, you'll just have to wait and see.

Here are some highlights from the last 7 years:

2016 - The first official office - a whopping 100 sqft! Definitely an upgrade from the desk in the basement.

2016 - The original Batt Pack Power, the predecessor the Batt Pack Energy you know and love today.

2016 - Francois wins Entrepreneur of the year and gets featured in Macleans magazine.

2017 - Francois' mom joins the team to support on the sales front (and she is still the record holder today!).

2017 - The very early versions of the Batt Pack Energy, when we first started to gain interest from the mining industry.

2018 - Our first official full-time employee Mike Pinosa comes on board (he's still with us today!). This was also in our new office space, a massive upgrade at 2000 sqft (which we outgrew very quickly).

2018 - The team is growing - video game day at the office with some more early team members.

2020 - We expand from portable power to stationary energy storage & solar systems with the launch of our PT batteries and Power Tower.

2022 - Our wonderful team today (with a few key players missing from this photo). We couldn't do it without you.

Our pro-grade, fuel-free portable power packs are proudly made in Canada and are ruggedly weatherproof. Designed to withstand the harshest conditions, we won't let something like a little snow, rain & cold stop us from finding our freedom.

And because we believe in pushing boundaries, we've been working on something extra special for the last 18 months. It's smaller, lighter and more powerful than ever
before - proving the best things do come in small packages.

Heating and cooling are easily some of the biggest power draws when it comes to energy consumption in the home. If you live in a cold weather climate (like Canada) and are designing an off grid system, your costs can easily blow through the roof if you don't consider alternative heating sources. Here are a few to think about:

🪵 Pellet Stove - this is an ultra efficient and cost effective option that can put out some serious heat. It burns cleaner than wood, and when we build our own off grid property, this is our top pick.

🪓 Wood Burning Stove - this will probably bring back memories of winters spent at family cottages. While nostalgic, it's still a solid option for heating off grid properties and tiny homes.

🔥Heat Pump - something we don't see as often, but definitely deserves a spot in the mix. There are some super efficient models out there and this is actually what we use on our liveaboard boat right now!

🪨 Geothermal Heat Pump - some people swear by them, however they still require moderate energy to function and may not produce enough heat for your home depending on the set up and climate.

⛽️ Propane Heaters - these are another popular choice, as they are quick and easy to use. There is however always a safety (and sustainability) concern when it comes to propane.

🍂 Biomass Boilers - this can be a great option that runs off either scavenged materials (logs, branches, etc.) or purchased wood/wood chips, however they can be more costly upfront and require more maintenance.

When running off grid, we recommend avoiding space heaters as primary heat sources if possible, as they draw significant power. If you do find yourself in need of an extra boost, check out radiant space heaters as a more efficient alternative.

Let's talk microinverters. These bad boys have been generating a lot of buzz in the solar industry, proving that good things do come in small packages. But remember, solar systems are not one size fits all and while microinverters have a lot to offer, they do have some limitations too.

PROS

✔️They can be more cost effective upfront, making it easier and quicker to get into solar.

✔️They make it easy to expand your system by adding additional panels & microinverters as needed.

✔️You can track performance on a per panel basis (instead of whole system basis).

CONS

❌They can only be used for grid-tied (net-metered) systems, so if you ever want to go off grid or install backup power, you'll need to start from scratch.

❌You cannot manage loads with multiple circuits, which means they aren't ideal for EV owners.

❌They are more difficult to troubleshoot and replace if any issues do arise.

❌They can take longer to install and require more hardware.
