This week, we're shining a spotlight on the heartwarming stories that bind us together at St. James. We start with testimonial by The Fudge Family who has been a part of our congregation for more than 50 years. Their memories and experiences within these walls speak to the rich tapestry of our community. DROP US A FEW LINES AND TELL US WHAT ST. JAMES MEANS TO YOU! Let's celebrate our shared history.
“WHAT ST. JAMES MEANS TO ME”
By Edwina (Fudge) Bateman
In the tender embrace of St. James Church, I discovered my sanctuary more than 55 years ago—an innocent child, tightly gripping my father and mother’s hands as we stepped through its sacred doors. This haven, with its steeples reaching towards the heavens and overlooking the rolling shoreline, became the very essence of my existence.
Within these hallowed walls, my family’s story has gracefully unfolded for over half a century. The laughter of my childhood, echoing through the pews, and the whispered prayers shared with loved ones have woven a tapestry of memories that define my life.
Immersing myself in the diverse organizations within this spiritual home has provided solace, camaraderie, and an unspoken sense of purpose. Here, bonds were forged, the power of community unfolded, and the threads of my life intricately woven into the collective spirit of this beloved church.
Even today, after countless years, St. James beckons me with an indescribable force. It’s more than a place of worship; it’s a haven of peace, a repository of countless stories, and the guardian of my dearest memories. The stained-glass windows, capturing the essence of my outport roots; the classic pipe organ, once played by my mother until her strength could no longer make it sing; the sturdy wood that my father lovingly preserved with his carpentry skills—all of these, intertwined with the traditional milestones of my life, make St. James my home away from home.
As our community faces the daunting task of preserving this beacon on the hill, my heart swells with gratitude. Gratitude for the strength embodied by St. James, for the unwavering community that envelops it, and for the countless moments of solace and joy it has gifted me.
To me, St. James is not only a church; it's a living, breathing testament to a lifetime of love, faith, and shared history. The notion of it fading into mere memory is unfathomable. Together, let us rally to preserve this sacred space, ensuring that its legacy endures, and its doors remain open for generations to come.
The Bible Tells Us So…Psalm 127:1: Psalm 127:1 (NIV): "Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain."
