How do Prince Edward Island lobster fishers protect the resource?

Multi-year integrated management plans ensure that a healthy fishery is maintained in PEI. The plans may vary from region to region and some practices are enforceable by government while others are voluntary, but here is a list of key conservation measures utilized by the PEI lobster fishery:

Carapace Size Limit: Minimum (in some cases maximum) lobster carapace shell size is established for each area based on the condition of the fishery.

Limited Number of Licenses: the number of licenses is limited, determined by the management plan.

Seasons: Prince Edward Island lobster fishers fish in either of just two seasons. The spring season usually runs May 1- June 30 and the fall from about August 9 – October 9.

Trap Limits: Each PEI fishing license is limited to 250-300 traps depending on location.

Escape Mechanisms: PEI lobster traps are equipped with escape mechanisms that enable undersized lobsters to exit the trap. As well biodegradable panels enable trapped lobsters to escape in the event the trap is lost at sea.

Females: PEI fishers release female lobsters bearing eggs or of optimum breeding size.

Fishing Days: in PEI lobster fishers work just six days per week during the season.

Research: PEI fishers actively collaborate with researchers to collect data to better inform sustainability measures for the future.

COOKING PEI LOBSTER AT HOME FAQs

HOW DO I STORE LIVE LOBSTER?
Don't submerge lobster in water or ice! Instead, simply keep in an open large container within your fridge, and cover with wet paper towel or cloth and keep wet and cold until you're ready to cook.

HOW MANY DAYS CAN I KEEP LIVE LOBSTER?
Including how long it took to ship to you, live lobster can usually be kept for a maximum of two days as long as you have followed proper storage instructions.

HOW LONG CAN I KEEP COOKED LOBSTER?
If your cooked lobster is still in the shell, it can be kept in your fridge within a covered container for up to two days. If your cooked meat has been shucked, keep it in a covered container within your fridge for two to three days... if you can keep from eating it for that long!

CAN I FREEZE LOBSTER?
Live lobster should never be frozen! For cooked meat (either shucked or still in their shells), submerge the full product within a mix of 1 litre of fresh water and 1/4 cup of salt, place in a sealed container or plastic bag, and freeze.

HOW DO I DEFROST FROZEN LOBSTER?
Place the frozen lobster in your refrigerator for 15-20 hours to have it naturally thaw slowly. If you placed the lobster and brine in a plastic bag, you can run it under running water for a faster defrost.
