Sand Trays Etc.

Sand Trays Etc. Sand Trays, Rolling carts, puppet stands, and furniture for therapy and the play room. Most of our products are made from re-claimed and used wood.

Sand Trays Etc. is a speciality builder, primarily of therapeutic sand trays, as used by mental health care professionals who work with children. Our main buyers are child and family therapists, counsellors, and teachers, though sand trays are gaining wider use outside of the clinical playroom and we welcome anyone to contact us who might be interested in our products. In addition to this Sand T

rays Etc. builds a variety of types of rolling carts, built specifically for sand trays and to accommodate the requirements of the play or therapy room, such as storage of multiple trays, specific height requirements, etc. We also build puppet stands, easels, and other things that are often required in a therapist's playroom - often building to specifications requested by our clients. This is the 'special request' aspect of our business. Although there is usually a waiting period required when a client makes a special request, in the end the wait will have been worthwhile because the result will be a hand-built product that will last a lifetime and serve precisely the needs of the client. As much as possible Sand Trays Etc. builds using re-claimed wood, which is acquired largely from building demolition sites and renovations, etc. Oak, maple, and fir are typical varieties of wood with which we build, though choices change frequently depending on what is available. A good example of the wood we build with is a large quantity of oak recently acquired from the demolition of two buildings on the University of B.C. campus in Point Grey, Vancouver. This building was built c.1925 and most of the oak had been in stair treads, door casings, window sills and railings etc. This is good stable wood and makes beautiful furniture - all of which now has an interesting back-story. We welcome everybody who has an interest to contact us and if there is something we can build for you we can start discussions!

Here is a new version of an older model rolling cart. A standard sand tray will 'over-sit' this cart and be held in place by 1/4" the perimeter lip that is on the underside of all of my sand trays. The cart is attractive enough to live in an office as a side or end table - or as a coffee table. The full extension slides on the drawer give full access to the entire drawer interior when opened. High storage (~6") on the lowest deck. Because of the 'over-sitting' style of this cart there is not adequate room on the lowest deck to store a sand tray. For this (i.e. below-deck storage of a second tray) you will need my other 19" rolling cart, imaginatively called Model 'C' -viewable on my website www.sandtrays.ca see it here: https://sandtrays.ca/product/rolling-sand-tray-cart-model-c/ This cart I am posting today is called (more imaginatively!) the "Karver". Contact me for details, this is a special order cart and not posted on my website. -gz

It has been one year now since I have been using a new finish on all of my sand tray interiors and exteriors, as well as all of my rolling carts. It was a big decision to make the change because the finish is perhaps one of the most important features of the things I build - even though it doesn't get a lot of attention!
After a LOT of research and a few careful trials I settled on a product made by the Italian wood-finish company Milesi. (check them out: https://www.milesi.com/en/https://www.milesi.com/en/)
I have been getting these products from the very capable and helpful people at Colombia Industrial Supplies in Victoria - check them out: https://www.facebook.com/columbiapaints
The new tray interiors are - for the first time - a waterborne (yes!!) 2-part finish (the “2-part’” refers to the fact that this paint must be mixed just prior to use with a catalyzing agent in a 10:1 formulation before it is applied. This causes the finish to dry harder than it otherwise would, which contributes significantly to its durability and abrasion resistance.) One year on, and I have been overwhelmed by how superior this product is to any others I have used - and am now ready to boast about it... I am also using a waterborne version of this same finish for my tray exteriors and rolling carts - a waterborne clear satin top coat. My satin black trays are also now finished with this same material - but black (of course!)
The initial three undercoats of all of my tray interiors remain the same as it has always been in the 11 years since I started building sand tray (and rolling carts) exclusively: a marine waterproofing epoxy that ensures total waterproofing of the tray interiors. Three
coats of the blue Milesi finish is applied overtop of the waterproofing epoxy, ensuring an extremely hard and durable and beautiful interior finish - the best I have achieved yet.
The decision to switch products was not made to save costs - the Milesi product is actually more expensive than any others I have used. This decision was made solely with the intent of improving even further the things I build - as it has always been my intention from the first days of starting this business to build rolling carts and sand trays that are durable and will never need to be replaced.
Thank you to everyone who has become an enthusiastic supporter of the things I build. -gz

New model rolling cart - called "Desk-C". This desk provides more than 15 lineal feet of storage for miniatures and figurines along three sides of the cart, and a knee-well on the fourth side for small legs in small chairs. The shelves can be configured to accommodate miniatures of different heights, and have raised lips on their outermost edges to prevent miniatures from falling off of them as the cart rolls. Locking casters, raised perimeter lip on the desk-top to prevent a sand tray (or anything else!) from sliding over the edge. This desk - like all of my rolling carts - is sized to accommodate one standard (Kalffian) sand tray. This desk does not include a sand tray - the sand tray in several of the pictures is there for demonstration only. Sand trays are sold separately and can be seen on our website. Please inquire [email protected] - this item is not yet listed on our website www.sandtrays.ca

Presenting my new model rolling cart, which has been two years in the works (seriously.) This cart replaces the original Model 'A" cart, which is a 28" cart with a pull-out deck that I have been making for almost 10 years. The Model "A" was my first cart, hence it's (very imaginative) name. However - it has been retired - after 9 years - and replaced with the "Afram" - a 28 inch cart, with nesting legs. This cart has a pull-out deck at ~21" from the floor, and a top deck at 28" from the floor, so it provides two working heights for clients using sand trays. It will also accommodate a third tray on the bottom-most deck. There is also a removable shelf above the bottom deck, approx. 20" x 21" - this shelf provides flexible storage options but - as the accompanying video shows - can also be completely removed if not needed.
The legs on the pull-out deck of this new cart are stationary (i.e. NOT folding) and this makes the cart very easy to operate: simply pull the deck to release it and move it into its fully extended position, and push the deck back into place when you want it put into its retracted position. There is no need to manipulate or handle any folding legs or support - very easy. It is a much improved version of the original Model "A".
The cart in the video is natural maple, the two sand trays are two of my oak sand trays. I will be making the Afram in both maple and oak. This new cart has not yet been posted on the website but ..watch for it. Or contact me if you are interested in more information about the "Afram" (better name than the others!) Thanks! -greg z

New model Rolling Cart
For eight years we have had three standard models of rolling cart - imaginatively named Models 'A' , 'B', and 'C' - and one folding stand. We have of course also been happy to make modified versions of all of these, and have always been open to special-order 'one-of-a-kind' rolling carts, as are often requested. We now have a new rolling cart we are calling a Model 'H'. No, we didn't just skip a few letters of the alphabet to be clever. We are calling it an 'H' because of the shape of the lower deck. This 28" cart is designed to allow a person's legs to fit underneath, so a sand tray can be accessed easily while sitting on a chair. This rolling cart offers less storage than our other carts, but instead is intended to allow for work while seated. There is a removable deck/shelf that sits about 4" below the top deck, which can be used for storage - or it can be totally removed. Up until now our folding stands were the only other item we had that allowed for seated access to a sand tray. Please contact us at [email protected] for more information - thanks for looking!

New product: Bamboo sand trays.
The original idea of this business was that our sand trays and rolling carts are made - as much as possible - from re-claimed and recycled wood. Although this is still the case, there has been an increasing emphasis on the ‘as much as possible’ part of that credo. This is because over the last 7 years the demand for our rolling carts and sand trays has grown (thank you all!) and this has highlighted the difficulty in acquiring adequate supplies of good serviceable hardwoods that qualify as ‘re-claimed and recycled.’ Merely sourcing the re-claimed hardwood has been, at times ,the greater part of our work, as much as the actual building of our sand trays and carts.
Recently an opportunity arose for us to experiment with bamboo as a material for sand trays, after a customer in California asked if we could build a sand tray out of bamboo. We have been so pleased by the result that we are now going to make bamboo sand trays a regular part of our offerings.
Bamboo is extremely renewable compared to wood, AND is also one of the strongest materials available – superior in many ways to wood. It also has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, requires far less water to grow than many alternatives, and can grow to a full size harvestable adult plant in as little as 3 years.
The benefits to bamboo are many, and can be easily researched – but I don’t want to miss pointing out one of the coolest things about the bamboo: it is eye-poppingly beautiful as a material for – among other things – sand trays.
Please contact Greg at [email protected] to learn more about these new sand trays.
