Thank you to everyone who has submitted their resume and cover-letter the last few weeks.

We have a serious Job Seeker question.

Although we have filled all but 3 positions posted for the latest hiring push - should we:

1. Take the job posting down until we get through every resume submitted?
OR
2. Leave the job posting live and continue screening resumes until we fill all positions?

Please feel free to message us privately or answer in the comments.

Thank you all in advance for your feedback.

Chestermere Welcomes New Firefighters

A developing city like the City of Chestermere requires its first responder presence to grow alongside its population. One of the City Council’s targets is ensuring firefighters, Peace Officers, and RCMP expands as needed to keep up with resident growth and required service levels. We’re delivering on our commitment to community safety with our recent approval to add more RCMP officers, and today with the addition of six new firefighters.

Adding these brave men and women to our team increases staffing levels around the clock and gives Chestermere Fire Services the ability to handle various calls quicker and more efficiently. It lets crews handle two calls at a time if needed, and be better prepared for larger issues and fires while focusing on firefighter safety and increased response times.

This highly trained new crew brings advanced care paramedic capability, primary car paramedic skills, and years of fire experience.

As part of this new class, the city proudly welcomes Chestermere’s first two full-time female firefighters.

We are truly excited to have this group join Fire Chief Coutts and the rest of our exceptional first responders. We have no doubt our city is in good, capable hands, and we look forward to working with them to advance our goal of protecting this vibrant, growing city.

We welcome them and wish them much safety and success!

10/18/2021

See the latest from October 17, 2021 where they talk about the shortage of commercial Drivers. This is not just an American challenge, it’s a Canadian problem - a North American problem.

We have discussed the with clients, industry members and frankly to anyone who gave us a platform to talk. This isn’t a new problem. This has been building year over year over year. It’s not just money - it’s working conditions - perception of the job - how society sees and treats Drivers … oh, did we mention the money!

We have seen the lights coming right at us all and we have done nothing to change this. Yes, we tapped the Temporary Foreign Worker Program but the operative word here is “Temporary”. These programs are meant to ease the pressure to give industry time to course correct and address the issues that have created this serious challenge. What have we done … nothing by my count.

Hang with me a while on this and please offer comment to help round out our conversation.

We have created and accepted an environment of “cheap”. There’s a much bigger discussion in here regarding all goods and services but We are focussing on .

It all starts with the customer. The top of the chain, the “customer” doesn’t want to pay the rates that are necessary to attract and maintain an acceptable pool of qualified .

Whether talking about long haul, overdimensional, fluid hauling, Vac truck … the rates have been ground down so far that it is almost an impossibility to turn a profit whether an , or - the customer doesn’t pay the rates deserving of the skilled labour. Yes - .

Drivers must undergo ~3 month driver training at a cost of $10K - $15K. Once they are out of school, like any other job, they must work side by side with other drivers to learn the industry amd other nuances to the job. Add the additional HSE requirements: Standard First Aid, TDG, WHMIS, Load Securement, Confined Space, Ground Disturbance, H2S Alive … yes, there’s more depending on the industry!

So, before they even turn a wheel, we are telling the average professional
Driver that they need $30K and they’ll be paid $25 - $30/hr. Yes, you’ve read that correctly!

Now, add lifestyle onto this. We ask these drivers to be away from their families for weeks on end and to make money they literally must live in their truck. I say their truck only if they have an additional $100K on top of everything else! Otherwise, they lease a truck from the employer (maintenance costs etc is on them) or they drive a company truck and are truly locked into those mediocre wages.

Is this the employers fault? In 99% of the cases .. NO. It comes back to the customer not paying the rates that are deserving of the service.

Fix #1 - We need the customers to pay the companies what the service is worth. This will ensure the drivers are paid what they’re worth.

Fix #2 - We need to remind the citizenry that are critical to our community. They deserve to be viewed and treated with a high degree of respect.

Fix #3 - Reduce the barriers to entry by reducing the costs to become a driver.

Fix - Create a professional option in High school for students to transition into the profession.

Fix - Include the option in rural communities where the need for agricultural support drivers can be met AND used as training ground.

Fix #5 - Respect - give these essential workers the respect they deserve. Create campaigns showing how various driver options (industry) requires intellect, attention to detail, safety consciousness, physicality, mathematical minded, organized … and so much more.

Fix #6 - Pay drivers what they’re worth!
