Bookmarking today as the day I’m stepping out of my frequency of lack & recommitting to my creative endeavours. I’ve wanted to make this reel since the beginning of the year (to celebrate hitting 1 year of hosting Art Nights) and couldn’t bring myself to complete it… UNTIL NOW 🤩
First I started by editing it on the wrong account, then on the right account came glitchy hurdles, then the time passing led to more ideas but backlogging them bc of this one video (I like things chronological but am too much of a perfectionist), even more time passing led to me just avoiding this account and the idea completely. I was never ready to give up the concept but also struggled to bring myself to finish it. Excuses, excuses.
I’m reading The Creative Act by Rick Rueben and it’s motivated me to value what I want to make simply because it’s something that interests ME. I don’t need to accept pressures from the external environment. If I WANT to do something, that is reason enough to go and DO IT. We are all our biggest critics and the more experienced we get, the more critical we get too. I reached a point in my professional-creator life that led me to setting the bar way too high and becoming fearful of creating anything in general.
Art, in any form, is meant to be materialized and then released into the world. We can always revisit it, but we can’t do that if we never reached the first completion checkpoint. K.I.S.S. Keep it simple, stupid. Focus on the broad goal, make the first iteration, and only then can you try to perfect it. We might find that as a whole, it’s good enough, and now we’re ready to grow into the next project or goal, instead of hyper-fixating on this one.
Being an artist is like publishing an abstract diary, page by page. It’s personal and intimate, but to others it might be profoundly incredible. We don’t have to find or assign meaning; all we have to do is get things out of our mind, and move on. Only then can we return & play “viewer” to our own art, often finding new meaning we never even realized in the first place.
Anyways, welcome to my lil creative empire I’m building piece by piece, at my own pace. Simply be
