This is a lovely 50 year old stand of Douglas-fir, spruce and cedar we are planning for a commercial thinning operation. This forest was clearcut in the mid 1970s, broadcast burned, planted, spaced and aerially fertilized. Our objectives include visual management, habitat improvement, timber recovery and wildfire fuel reduction, to name a few. Thanks to the Silviculture Innovation Program (SIP) program for support!

Wells Gray Community Forest was pleased to host a wildfire mitigation summit on July 6 and 7 in Clearwater. We brought in multiple subject matter experts and visited 4 unique sites around the community. The goals of the event were to guide the development of fuel mitigation strategies and to foster higher levels of knowledge and cooperation. We are thankful for the support of many organizations that made this event happen and are committed to the knowledge building necessary to plan robust treatments. WGCFC joined a UBC delegation to Finland this month, along with other community forest partners, to see how that country manages its forests. Finnish forests are privately owned but managed through collective partnerships. They thin their forests multiple times within a rotation, to recover as much material as possible. The undersized cuttings are processed at energy facilities to heat their public buildings.
Finland is a showcase of innovation and collaborative leadership that we can learn from as we move into an era of managing younger forests.

The Ministry of Forests is inviting residents to help guide forest management.

Open houses will collect feedback about what people value in local forests.

Residents in Kamloops, Clearwater, Barriere, Chase, Salmon Arm, Vernon, Ashcroft and surrounding areas are invited to share their input on the development of the Thompson River Watersheds Forest Landscape Plan to guide forest-management decisions in the area.

People can share their thoughts through a survey that will run from Wednesday, May 20, until July 20, 2026. The Thompson River watersheds plan team will also hold seven open houses and one virtual open house so people can learn more about forest landscape planning and ask questions.

Survey, open houses will collect feedback on what people value in local forests

Commercial thinning is one of the tools we have to solve a few challenges in forestry today. It helps mitigate the gap in the midterm timber supply, improve stand characteristics (if done well), and reduce forest fuels in the interface.

We are fortunate to work with Bruce Blackwell RPF and loggers like Volktrans - Canada Ltd. to find the right combination of treatment strategy and operational logistics to ensure a good result.
