Baffinland’s VP of Community and Strategic Development, Udlu Hanson, was pleased to co-host the Kivalliq Northern Perspectives 2026 conference in Winnipeg earlier this month.

In addition to her role at Baffinland, Udlu currently serves on a voluntary basis as President of the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce. In that capacity, she co-hosted the event alongside Tara Tootoo Fotheringham, President of the Kivalliq Chamber of Commerce.

This marked a significant milestone for the conference, as it was the first time both Chambers are led by Inuit women serving as Presidents.

The theme of the four-day conference was Connected Futures, and brought together leaders, businesses, community representatives, and innovators to explore opportunities for partnerships and economic growth between Manitoba and Nunavut. Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration and advancing responsible development.

Highlights included keynote remarks from Nunavut Premier John Main and an address from Craig Simailak, Minister of Community Services, who spoke about the importance of responsible resource development and its role in generating sustainable economic activity for the territory.

At Baffinland, we believe that meaningful dialogue and collaboration are essential to responsible development in the North. We are committed to engaging in these important discussions as the Mary River Project moves forward.

Leetia Kalluk, an intern with Baffinland’s Inuit Success team, has been away from work for the last few weeks pursuing her passion for music. In addition to her role at the Mary River Mine, Leetia is also an accomplished Inuktut singer-songwriter currently performing on the Qilaut 10th Anniversary Tour.

She is performing alongside fellow artists Kristy Kanayuk, Tooma Laisa and Jocelyn Malla. The tour kicked off at the Pond Inlet community hall on February 6th, followed by additional shows in Arviat and Cambridge Bay.

While working for Baffinland, Leetia competed in the 10th Annual Qilaut Contest last July, where she won third place and earned her spot on the tour.

Since joining Baffinland in June 2025, Leetia has been making an impact by helping develop career plans for Inuit employees, facilitating training sessions, and advocating for Inuit working at the Mary River Mine.

“There are so many resources available to employees at the mine, like mental health support and opportunities to advance our careers,” says Leetia. “I’m constantly encouraging others to work at Baffinland because it’s such a great company,” she adds. “I’ve had a very positive experience so far.”

In addition to her passion for music, Leetia has completed two years of a nursing program at Memorial University in Newfoundland and Labrador, and plans to continue her studies in the next few years.
