When dealing with customers, determining whether they are lying is usually not a priority, except perhaps when trying to find out what they really want and need.
Paul Ekman, renowned research psychologist, discovered that some facial expressions of emotion are universal, and co-discovered micro facial expressions. His latest blog about why it is difficult to determine when someone is lying is revealing about what potentially could prevent us from being truly observant towards facial expression can also teach us why we can misread people. Perhaps we are too polite or we prefer to be trusting, and letting us be misled.
Genuinely interacting with customers means empathy and empathy needs us to accurately understand and feel for people. Accurately reading facial expressions and body language is paramount.
