Urban wildlife conflict is something that we all need to be aware of, however as we work to manage one species, others become more at risk. Primarily over the summer months this conflict becomes more deadly.
Again this evening Pete and I were faced with an unpredictable situation of a rather large rattlesnake caught in deer netting. Situations like this force us to have the utmost trust in eachother to know that I will get the snake out quickly and Dad will maintain control of its head. The two us this up-close and personal is enough to drive a little bit of fear into anyone. Adrenaline kicks in and we get the job done - safely, humanely and quickly. This large guy was successfully freed and released to live another happy day and so are we.
Every year we are faced with numerous calls that consistently put ourselves and the snakes in danger. We ask that you please be mindful when you are wildlife proofing your yard:
* keep all deer netting a minimum of 6 to 8 inches off the ground
* ensure any mesh weave enclosures in gardens are no more than 1/8" gap (even a large snake can get tangled into a 1/4 inch space)
* keep any grain/birdseed contained as this attracts rodents; rodents are a main food source
The more we become attentive and adapt to all wildlife around (big and small) the faster we will find balance.
As always, we are available for any situation that arises and will do our best to make sure to keep everyone safe. Quick reminder, all snakes are protected in BC - if in conflict with one, please reach out.
Be well - Holly & Pete
