Monkey Tree Early Years Nature Program in Comox is located in a quiet neighborhood next to the Northeast Woods. Monkey Tree aims to be high quality childcare program for children between the ages of three and five years. Focusing on what we have been gifted, the natural world is our classroom. Children will be outdoors for the majority of the morning program, taking advantage of our local forest.

One Early Childhood Educator and six children provide a rich, intimate, and engaging interaction with peers and the natural world. A nature program that will be driven by children's interests, both here at Monkey Tree and out exploring in the forest, and other earthly areas! Children are competent, curious, and able to create their own theories, and Monkey Tree is here to support this. Honoring childhood and promoting the importance of nature in our daily lives, unstructured play, and big blocks of time for exploration and discovery. Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 12:00pm and the afternoon extends until 3:00pm for those families in need with the exception of Thursdays as I am a Volunteer Instructor with Roots of Empathy. Monkey Tree follows the Comox Valley School District 71 Calendar for holidays and closures. This Monkey Tree home has one 16 month old English Springer Spaniel, who does not participate in the children's program. She is a lovely pup, but a little too springy and lovey. ROBINS are 4 year olds on Monday/Wednesday/Friday. CHICKADEES are 3 year olds on Tuesday/Thursday. Elizabeth has been happily working with children and families for 15 years in BC and Alberta. An honour graduate and Valedictorian for Mount Royal University, Calgary, AB in 2002, and an advocate for childhood play and the natural world. Elizabeth Ashton

Today was the last day for Monkey Tree.

We’ve had the final two weeks of field trips, a birthday celebration, water play days, and a family gathering to send us all off into new adventures. I sincerely thank all the parents for the years here in Comox!

I had a parting gift for myself and all the families, a pro-photographer came to the forest last week and took a lot of pictures of our group! I’m really excited to see the finished photos.

I’ve received many beautiful words of gratitude from the families and honesty from the children. For example, one boy suggested my next job should be giving hugs. I should consider that.

Happy Solstice!
Keep playing!
Always seek new adventures...I’m on my way to explore and discover the next one!

Welcome JUNE and Goodbye MAY!

I didn't write to welcome May, and that felt awkward. I was getting myself through a transition and having to write just one paragraph for Monkey Tree seemed so daunting!

Yes we all have moments and days and weeks of not so good times. Children do as well, but how WE adults react make all the difference! The catch here is just HOW we react - is it nurturing and supportive? or is it with impatience and resentment?
We are the teachers!
Parents, caregivers, adults in all the spheres of influence for your child - we hold the power, and that power needs to smoothly become EMPOWERMENT for a child when that child is going through a tough time emotionally.
Adults - please mind your manners!
Adults - please be the adults!
Adults - please seek support from others!

Give yourself time and love, give children time and love - we're always growing, so help these young lives and older lives be BEAUTIFUL!

And for the love of life, please go outside and get dirty, play in the rain, dig in the garden, get buried in the sand, paint and create, eat white snow, make pine cone and chocolate tea, sleep under the stars, and make forts - lots of forts.

Monkey Tree Early Years Nature Program will be closing forever at the end of June 2018.
It has been an amazing journey of growth, both professionally and personally. I have been blessed with surrounding myself with like minded souls, my tribe - we all have one, tap into yours and the freedom will surprise you!

Keep playing!

Downpour on Wednesday and wearing sunglasses and sweaters on Thursday.
Wind warnings are flooding social media, for East Vancouver Island, although there is currently only a breath of a breeze. I’m off to walk the dog in the sunshine for now as the Wacky Weather Month continues!

We had a lovely Spring Break and yet still opened four days to welcome friends to play!
April should be tagged with Wacky Weather Month, because it’s been a rollercoaster of Spring elements.

Here we are with siblings on Spring Break Play Dates, playing in the sandpit in the middle of the forest, and here we are starting our bean seed planting and we’ll add in lettuce and flowers soon.
