Planning a vacation and planning for retirement may have more in common than we think.

My wife and I are heading to the Maritimes this month for a little work and a little sightseeing. One of the enjoyable parts of the trip has been the planning itself — researching routes, choosing places to stay, identifying experiences we want to have, and deciding what matters most to us along the way.

Most people naturally approach travel this way. We plan for it.
What’s less common is bringing that same level of thoughtful preparation to retirement — a stage of life that could last 30 years or more.

Interestingly, good vacation planning is not about scheduling every moment in 10-minute increments. It’s about having a sense of direction. It’s about identifying the destinations, experiences, and waypoints that matter most while leaving room for flexibility, spontaneity, and discovery.

Retirement planning works much the same way.
The people who tend to navigate retirement transitions most successfully are not necessarily those with the most detailed spreadsheets or rigid plans.

They are often the ones who have taken time to reflect on questions like:
What kind of life do I want to create?
What experiences matter most?
Who do I want to spend time with?
What gives me energy and purpose?

Financial planning is critically important, but so is life planning.
This is the work I do with my clients — helping them think intentionally about the road ahead so they can move into retirement with greater clarity, confidence, and purpose.

All about the importance of slowing down, hopping off the treadmill of life and reflecting prior to the retirement transition. I walk beside my clients in this transition planning!

Enjoy the short read :)

Meeting up with former students is one of my favorite things.

This spring, I've had the opportunity to connect with alumni from the North Island College Business Administration program. Over 21 years I've been fortunate to see many, many students (I wonder how many in total??) come and go. Too many success stories to name, but so wonderful to see so many flourish.

Some of these chats have just been to catch up, and others have been about my retirement coaching work in the private sector.....full circle moments for sure!!

Regardless, it always feels great to catch up and know that our paths have crossed in a learning, growing environment. The learning never stops :)

Comparing the first half and second half of life..... www.billparkinson.ca

The first half of life involves accumulation....of knowledge, skills, certifications, job titles, money. All of these things are necessary to build a life.

The second half of life is often characterized by shedding things that matter less to us as we age and deepen into ourselves. Many of the things required to build a life in our first half, no longer serve us in the second half. Career advancement and job titles matter less for example, with more emphasis focused on what feeds us emotionally and relationally. Some of this shift between the two halves happens organically over time, and other aspects require intentionality to really align ourselves clearly with the aspects of life that matter most to us in our second half :)

Ironically, the challenge of second half adjustments can be greatest for those who have done very well in the accumulation phase.

I help my clients clarify their intentions and priorities in the second half. A very enjoyable and rewarding process. I'm privileged to have these conversations!!

Special thanks to Kathy Berg , CFP from RBC Wealth Management in for hosting me last night to speak to her clients about lifestyle planning for retirement. I enjoyed the interaction with this group.

My work very much compliments the work that financial professionals do with their clients. It is important to prepare for both the financial and non-financial aspects of retirement.

The retirement question nobody asks soon enough...

Most people ask, “Do I have enough money?”
Far fewer ask, “What will my days actually feel like?”

When the meetings, deadlines, and routines disappear, what will give your life structure, purpose, and connection?

Money funds retirement.

Meaning sustains it.

The people who thrive in retirement are usually the ones who take time to design the life they want to retire into, not just the finances that allow it.

Retirement is more than leaving work.

It is creating what comes next.

I was recently asked by a prospective client, “What’s the typical age of your clients?”

The honest answer: there isn’t one.

I’ve worked with clients as young as 45, as seasoned as 70, and everywhere in between—some 10 years from retirement, others already a few years into it.

Because retirement lifestyle planning isn’t about age.
It’s about the moment you realize you want more clarity and intention for what comes next.

For some, that happens long before they leave work.
For others, it happens after the honeymoon phase of retirement wears off and they begin asking, “Now what?”

That’s why the most meaningful retirement planning is never one-size-fits-all—it’s personal.

If you’re thinking about your next chapter, your timing is the right timing.

Visit my website to learn how I help people design a retirement life they can truly grow into. I partner with clients to help clarify their post-career vision so they can make the transition with greater confidence.
