A major milestone has been reached at Clarabelle Mill, one of the key facilities supporting mining operations across the Sudbury Basin.

With the completion of Phase 1 of the Clarabelle Mill Revitalization Project, the mill is now better positioned to support current and future mining activity in the region. The project included significant upgrades to critical infrastructure and processing systems, helping ensure the facility can continue to serve as an important part of Sudbury’s mining industry for years to come.

The revitalization project represents a significant investment in Ontario operations, supporting the long-term sustainability of mining in the region and helping maintain the infrastructure needed to process ore from local mines.

As work continues on the next phase of improvements, these upgrades will help strengthen the future of mining in the Sudbury Basin, supporting jobs, economic activity, and the communities that have grown alongside the industry for generations.

August 20 marks the 56th anniversary of the tornado that passed through Sudbury in 1970.

The Superstack, then under construction, swayed during the storm but was not damaged, demonstrating its durability. The Inco Triangle reported:
"There were 25 men aloft on the stack top when the Aug. 20 storm struck during the morning shift change. Undaunted by their hair-raising experience, all men either remained on the job or returned on their next shift as scheduled. Due to good general safety practices, including lashing down all loose equipment and material, no injuries or losses occurred." (Inco Triangle, September 1970)

Ironically, the final day of concrete placement for the Stack's exterior shell had been planned for that same day. Reports indicate power was lost for six hours across the region when the storm hit.
Construction of the concrete shell was completed by the evening of August 21, 1970.

Today, the Superstack stands at 936 feet (285 metres). Since our last update on July 24, it has been lowered by 100 feet (30.5 metres). In total, the structure has been reduced by 310 feet (94.5 metres) since dismantling began.

How can we create workplaces where people feel supported?

This week, employers, labour representatives, service providers, public health professionals, and Indigenous partners came together at Laurentian University's Indigenous Sharing and Learning Centre to exchange ideas and experiences on how workplaces can better support employees and families affected by substance use and addiction.

Facilitated by the Development Partner Institute (DPI) and supported by Vale Base Metals, the gathering focused on practical ways to make support easier to access, reduce barriers to seeking help, and foster workplace cultures where people feel valued and supported.

Thank you to everyone who shared their perspectives and contributed to these important conversations.

We were pleased to welcome members of our Community Liaison Committee, including the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce's Jennifer, to our Vermillion Water Treatment Plant.

It was a pleasure to showcase the important work our team does every day to provide safe, reliable drinking water.

Canal Days is here in Port Colborne! 🎉

The long-awaited Canal Days festival is underway, bringing four days of family-friendly fun, history, heritage, and entertainment along the Welland Canal.

Vale Base Metals is proud to be a Captain Sponsor of this year's event, supporting the volunteer and medical tents that help make the festival possible. Think of it as an extra set of eyes underground, helping our crews avoid collisions and get home safe every day, while making our operations even smarter and more efficient.

Sudbury has always been at the heart of mining innovation, and it's proud to see that legacy continue today, built right here in our own backyard. 💡⛏️

Superstack Dismantling Project Update

The Superstack demolition has been in full swing this year since June 1st.
We truly are starting to notice the Superstack getting shorter day by day.

Since our last update on Jun 24th the Superstack was lowered by 52 feet -15.8 metres.

The Superstack has been reduced by a total of 210 feet - 64 metres to date .

56 Years Ago...
On July 24, 1970, the Superstack was taking significant shape over Sudbury's skyline. The first concrete pour had begun on March 2,1970. By July 24th construction crews would be on day 144 of the 172 days of continuous concrete pouring needed to complete at the time what would be the tallest freestanding structure in the world. By July 24th, 1970, the Superstack concrete shell would have been the exact same height as you see it today.
Imagine looking up on a summer night in 1970 and seeing this view for the first time as the Superstack emerged above the city.
