A great afternoon connecting with the new Seniors Professional Network for Surrey and Langley! 🎉

More than 20 professionals joined the meeting, representing a variety of senior-serving organizations, including senior living communities, moving and downsizing specialists, physiotherapists, home care providers, plus so many other professionals who support older adults.

A special thank you to Shally Prasad, Sales and Community Relations Manager at Bolivar Creek Retirement Residence, for taking the time to connect, and to the team at Bolivar Creek Retirement Residence for kindly hosting today's gathering.

It was wonderful meeting so many passionate people who are making a difference in the lives of older adults and their families. Looking forward to our ongoing monthly collaborations, sharing resources, building relationships, and finding new ways to support our beautiful community.

🌿 A Wonderful Morning Supporting Family Caregivers in Port Coquitlam 🌿

I had the pleasure of participating in a Mini Health Fair in Port Coquitlam last Friday, hosted by Wilson Seniors through the Family Caregiver Hub Program grant. Thank you to everyone who attended and took the time to connect, ask questions, and share your caregiving experiences💙

A special thank you to Royce Shook and Pat Dales from the Wilson Seniors Board for the warm welcome, and to Stacey Dawes from Family Caregivers of BC, who spoke before me and shared valuable information about the supports and services available to family caregivers across the province.

It was also wonderful to connect with Linda Yauk from Seniors First BC and Massi Bakhshian from Safe Care Home Support and the Adult Cognitive Wellness Centre. Events like these are such a great reminder of the incredible network of organizations working together to support older adults and their families.

During my presentation, I shared practical ideas for reducing caregiver stress and spoke about the Family Caregiver Support Group that I facilitate on the 2nd Wednesday of every month in Port Coquitlam. Caregiving can feel overwhelming at times, but you don't have to navigate it alone.

💙 If you're caring for a loved one living with dementia or other cognitive changes, you're warmly invited to join us. The group provides education, practical strategies, resources, and an opportunity to connect with others who truly understand the caregiving journey.

To add to this awareness, we are inviting you to join us for an insightful and compassionate session with 𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧 𝐓𝐲𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐥, designed for families and professional caregivers. This event explores the often-overlooked topic of unintentional emotional abuse in dementia care, subtle behaviours and patterns that may harm relationships without us even realizing it.

Learn how to recognize these signs, improve communication, and foster a more supportive and respectful care environment.

Together, we’ll uncover practical strategies to strengthen trust, connection, and understanding in the caregiving journey.

Feel free to share this with others.

🧠 What happens when correcting someone you love no longer brings clarity—and may actually increase distress?

Dementia Solutions' Karen Tyrell joins Andrew Karesa on a powerful podcast episode exploring one of the most misunderstood challenges in dementia care: Anosognosia: When a person living with dementia genuinely does not recognize that anything is wrong.

Drawing on more than 30 years of experience, Karen shares compassionate, practical strategies to help families and care partners navigate difficult conversations, reduce distress, and preserve dignity. Learn why arguing often backfires, how therapeutic reasoning can help keep the peace, and why behavior is often a form of communication.

🎙 In this episode, you'll discover:
✔️ Why correcting someone living with dementia can increase distress
✔️ What anosognosia is and how it affects conversations
✔️ How to respond to repeated questions with compassion
✔️ Why agitation is communication—not defiance
✔️ The importance of building support before caregiver burnout occurs
✔️ What preserving dignity looks like in everyday care

Whether you're caring for a parent, supporting a spouse, working in dementia care, or navigating a recent diagnosis, this conversation offers valuable insights and practical guidance.

💙 You cannot win an argument with dementia—but you can change how you respond.

I had a really great time yesterday at the Seniors Expo at Rosemary Heights in South Surrey!

A big thank you to Tarn Rai, the Community Relations Manager, who organized such a wonderful event.

It was great connecting again with so many colleagues who are supporting older adults in recognition of Seniors Week. I also enjoyed meeting new people who were not aware of some of the services available to them in the community, including those we offer at Dementia Solutions.

A wonderful afternoon filled with great conversations, delicious food, and good friends!😊

It's hard to believe it's already been a week since the 49th Annual BC Care Providers Association Conference! 💙

We've found ourselves reflecting on what a fantastic few days it was. We were honoured to present alongside the wonderful Praveena Dutt from Hero Home Care on our session, "Take Me Home: Understanding the Meaning Behind the Words to Guide Better Dementia Care Across All Settings." It was such a privilege to share this conversation and hear from everyone who connected with the topic.

Truly, one of our favourite parts was connecting with so many incredible people! 😊 We continue to feel inspired by the conversations, shared insights, and meaningful connections that were made throughout the conference.

A big thank you to all of the organizers, volunteers, presenters, and attendees who made the conference such a success. The energy in the room, the thoughtful discussions, and the genuine passion for improving the lives of older adults and people living with dementia was truly inspiring.

Thank you for making it such a memorable event, and we are already looking forward to the 50th Conference next year! 🎉
