The Nehru Centre, in association with Sama Arts Network, is proud to present the London debut of Vancouver-based young sarod artist Hriday Buddhdev at The Nehru Centre.

Registration for complimentary pass, via email: [email protected]

Address: The Nehru Centre, 8 South Audley Street, London W1K 1HF.

Born and raised in British Columbia, Hriday began his musical journey on the tabla at the age of four before turning to the sarod at nine under the guidance of the late Dr. Thomas Hunter, Sanskrit lecturer at the University of British Columbia and direct disciple of Ust Ali Akbar Khan. Dr. Hunter’s encouragement set Hriday on the instrument’s deeply rewarding path with Ust. Alam Khan. Through this same lineage, David Trasoff, also a direct disciple of Ust Ali Akbar Khan and one of the few craftsmen trained in the Maihar tradition of sarod lutherie, oversaw the making of Hriday’s sarod.

Now 21 years old and a recent UBC Computer Science graduate, Hriday studies under Baba’s son, Alam Khan (sarod) and Pt Swapan Chaudhuri (tabla) at the Ali Akbar College of Music, continuing a lifelong journey within the Maihar gharana lineage. A three-time Advanced Instrumental Scholarship recipient, he is among the few sarod artists emerging from Canada today and has been recognised as one of CBC Music’s Top 30 Classical Musicians Under 30. His heritage reflects a rich transnational lineage, with family roots in Gujarat, Kenya, and the United Kingdom.

On tabla, Himmet Singh is recognised as one of the United Kingdom’s leading tabla artists. He began his training at the age of five under Ustaad Harkirat Singh Rayatt, and later became a disciple of internationally renowned tabla maestro Suresh Talwalkar. Himmet has pursued extensive advanced one-to-one training in the traditional Hindustani classical method of “Seena Baseena.”
