At Hevvy/Toyo Pumps, quality control doesn’t start when a finished pump reaches the test area. It starts much earlier.

We inspect components throughout the manufacturing process, check assemblies, and test finished equipment before it leaves our shop. Because in slurry service, a detail that seems small during manufacturing can become a much bigger problem once the pump is in the field.

That’s what quality control is about: catching those details here, where we can fix them,, not later, when someone is trying to keep an operation running.

Our ISO 9001:2015 certification provides a framework for that process, but the certificate isn’t the point. The point is having consistent systems, documentation and checks behind the equipment we build.

A lot happens between an engineering drawing and a pump leaving our shop. Doing it right means paying attention to every step.

Australia knows tough mining. So do we. 🇦🇺

This October, Hevvy/Toyo Pumps is heading to Sydney for IMARC 2026.

We’re bringing decades of slurry-pumping experience, engineering know-how, and equipment built for the applications that make mining difficult — from process sumps and dewatering to tailings, backfill and everything in between.

If you’re dealing with abrasive slurries, high solids, difficult sumps or a pumping application that refuses to behave, come talk pumps with us.

Building a good slurry pump is one thing. Understanding what that pump will handle is another.

Every application brings its own set of conditions: solids, chemistry, operating point, wear, system layout, maintenance requirements and sometimes a few surprises that weren't on the original drawing.

That's where our engineering team comes in. Sometimes the right answer is one of our proven pump designs. Other times, the application calls for different materials, a design modification, or an engineered solution built around a very specific challenge.

Either way, the process starts in the same place: understanding the application before deciding what the pump needs to be.

We've spent decades solving slurry problems, and the hardest ones are still the most interesting. That's the kind of work we like.

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we reflect on the history and lasting impact of the residential school system in Canada.
We honour the Indigenous children who never returned home, the Survivors, their families, and the communities that continue to carry the impacts of this history.
Reconciliation is an ongoing journey, one that calls for listening, learning, reflection, and meaningful action.

Today, we encourage our team and community to take the time to learn, reflect, and honour the experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

Heavy solids have an annoying habit of settling exactly where you don’t want them.

In a slurry sump, getting liquid into the pump is only half the battle. If heavier solids settle at the bottom while the pump keeps pulling the easier material above them, you eventually stop emptying the sump. You’re slowly building a new floor.

That’s where agitation earns its keep. The goal is to bring settled solids back into suspension around the pump suction so they can actually leave the sump instead of accumulating underneath it.

It’s also why agitator design matters. More movement isn’t necessarily the goal; you want useful movement in the right place.

We’ve worked with agitator technology for more than 40 years, and the principle is still pretty straightforward: before you can pump the solids, you have to get them moving.

Slurry has a habit of staying exactly where you don’t want it. We prefer otherwise.

A leaking packing gland has a pretty tempting solution: grab a wrench. And sometimes, an adjustment is exactly what it needs. But if tightening becomes the go-to response every time leakage increases, you may just be treating the symptom.

Packing needs controlled leakage to help lubricate and cool the sealing area. Tighten it too much and you can restrict that lubrication, increase friction and generate excess heat — which can accelerate wear instead of solving it.

And if packing keeps needing adjustment, it’s worth looking beyond the gland. Packing selection and installation matter, but so do the condition of the shaft or sleeve and the operating environment around the seal. Repeated leakage can be a clue that something else in the system needs attention.

That’s why the goal isn’t simply to get the packing as tight as possible. It’s to get the sealing system operating the way it was intended to.

A dry packing gland might look like a win. It isn’t necessarily one.

Another HNVO-C is getting ready to leave our shop, this time heading to a major North American steel producer.

At first glance, it’s a large vertical pump. But there’s a lot more behind the equipment than what you see in the finished assembly.

This pump was selected for a coal and water handling application, where solids management, material selection, and the demands of vertical pumping all play a role in how the equipment needs to perform. That’s why the engineering process goes beyond simply matching flow and head.

The characteristics of the material being pumped, the way solids behave in the sump, the environment around the equipment, and how the pump will be maintained in operation all influence the final design.

Even features built into the pump have a purpose. This HNVO-C incorporates a lineshaft design and a suction belt specifically developed to help manage solids and keep the pumping process moving.

Those decisions may not always be obvious when looking at the finished pump. But they matter once the equipment is in the field.

Good pump engineering isn't just about building the equipment; it's about understanding what the equipment has to do.

In slurry pumping, it’s easy to focus on average particle size. But sometimes, the largest particles in the slurry can influence the entire system design.

Even a slurry containing mostly fine particles can create a plugging risk if a few oversized particles make their way through the system.

One useful engineering guideline is the 40% rule: maximum particle size should generally be no more than roughly 40% of the pipe’s inside diameter.

Why does that matter?

Particles that are too large relative to the pipe can increase the risk of bridging and plugging, potentially limiting the production rate the system can reliably sustain.

And changing the pipe diameter doesn’t happen in isolation. A larger pipe may require more flow to maintain the necessary transport velocity, influencing pump selection and the overall system design.

A few oversized particles can influence decisions far beyond the particle itself.

In slurry pumping, the material details matter. And sometimes, the biggest detail is the one you don’t see very often.
