Please be advised that Wild Cove will remain closed tomorrow, June 6th in order to continue with fire suppression efforts and the safe clean-up of the site. We are not open on Sunday per regular operating hours.

We will provide an update on Sunday evening via our Facebook and Instagram social media accounts with the plan for Monday.

We would like to thank the numerous organizations and agencies who have been assisting us thus far.

At approximately 10:30 p.m. last night, the Corner Brook Fire Department received a call of a fire at the Wild Cove Transfer Station where crews responded immediately. The fire at the Wild Cove Transfer Station is now contained, but crews continue to work on hot spots. The primary objective was to prevent the fire from spreading into nearby forest, which has been successful. We now have Marine Contractors on site with an excavator to assist with breaking apart burning piles so water can be applied directly to fire sources. Forestry is expected on site to assess if further resources are required.

Residents may notice increased smoke in parts of the City depending on wind conditions and in the immediate area of the Wild Cove Transfer Station. Those with respiratory concerns, young children and seniors are encouraged to limit outdoor activity if smoke is present and keep windows and doors closed if smoke levels increase in your area.

We appreciate the continued efforts of our crews and partners.

SUSTAINABILITY MINUTE

Brought to you in partnership by NL Games and WRWM: Sustainability Minutes are a 'Green the Games' Initiative to promote sustainable living and a greener future for our athletes.

Check back every Saturday for a Sustainability tip that you can adapt in minutes!

Today's Tip is for Food Sustainability:

Have a cupboard/ fridge cleanout night once per week before you do your grocery shop, and try to cook up ingredients that have been in the back of the pantry for a while. One option is a 'pub-style' night where you cook up all the remaining boxed snacks (mozza sticks, chicken nuggets, etc) and make a meal out of the two or three of each snack left.

Another option is to use recipe tools to substitute ingredients. For example, using doritos instead of bread crumbs as a bread coating for your chicken or baked mac-n-cheese
