Corn Silage
As we approach corn silage harvest, here are some considerations for harvesting at the right time for a silage bag:
🌽the video below 👇🏻👇🏻 outlines a simple way to test your corn - we put a lot of “stalk” in it 😉
🌽ideal moisture for bagging is 60-65% (35-40% dry matter)
🌽the kernel cannot be the only reference for silage readiness - the stalk should be drying down as well - the entire plant must be considered.
🌽contrary to popular belief, corn for bags and bunks are not harvested at the same moisture - bagged corn should be harvested at similar moisture to tower silo
🌽if your corn would cause a tower silo to “run” do not put it in a bag - it’s too wet at this point
