It's a beautiful day for a , but unfortunately it won't be at the Warwick Forest in the Township of North Stormont. We have decided to keep the recreational trails closed until at least Friday due to leaning and bent trees from heavy snow.

Please note that harvest operations continue on the south trails and they will remain closed for additional weeks.

Updates on trail closures will be provided when available.

Since 1949, over 1,000,000 conifers have been planted at the Warwick Forest. It’s also home to a wetland, which is an important natural feature providing wildlife habitat and numerous beneficial functions for people, fish, and wildlife, such as flood control and water retention.

Reminder: the entire south trail at the Warwick Forest Conservation Area in the Township of North Stormont is temporarily closed to accommodate harvest operations on SDG land.

The northern trails, accessible from the parking lot, remain open.

Please respect posted signage and don't access closed trails.

Harvest operations are taking place to remove dead and less desirable trees from the landscape to help improve overall forest health and ensure sustainable growth.

Warwick Forest Trail Closure Reminder: the Warwick Forest's south trail (pictured here; it's the entrance located across the road from the parking lot) is closed for approximately 5-6 weeks while forest management and harvesting operations are underway.

The northern trail network (which is the entrance accessible from the parking lot) and other trails in the forest will remain open.

The Warwick Forest includes several different parcels of land owned by SNC, The United Counties of Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry, and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. The closed trail and harvest operations are on the SDG Land, across the road from the parking lot.

Signs have been installed onsite (pictured here) indicating which trails are open and closed. SNC will also be installing additional directional signage this week.

Love cookies? Our field crews do too! They are out collecting cookies now. Tree cookies, that is!

As part of efforts to more accurately forecast how much wood volume trees produce and how productive our forest sites are, crews are sampling trees in mixed stands of black spruce and trembling aspen.

They cut cookies (or discs) at intervals along tree stems and deliver them to the lab for processing. This fall they will collect over 2300 tree discs from trees at 30 sites across Ontario.

Processing involves sanding each disc and using scanners and software to analyze the growth rings. The tree rings provide information about how fast the trees grew and how their growth and stem shape is affected by where they grew, how many and what type of trees they developed with, and changes in climate.

Our researchers use the data to develop more accurate models to support forest management planning. For more about our forest research and monitoring work, visit ontario.ca/page/forest-research.
