When underground water, sewer, or electrical lines fail, the repair is only part of the job. How those lines are exposed matters just as much.

Many insurance policies include underground utility coverage, which can apply to buried service lines damaged by roots, ground movement, corrosion, or accidental impact. To protect that coverage and avoid further damage, we use a process called daylighting. That means safely exposing underground infrastructure so repairs can be completed accurately and documented properly.

At WINMAR Kootenay, we choose the right method for each situation:

• Excavation when larger access is required

• Careful hand exposure around fragile lines

• Hydrovac when precision and minimal disturbance are critical

Using the correct approach reduces the risk of secondary damage, supports insurance documentation, and helps keep repair costs under control.

Underground losses are complex. Experience and the right tools make the difference.

When asbestos containing materials are present, preparation and containment are critical before any removal begins.

In this project, our team built a full containment area to safely remove asbestos containing wall tile using SDS hammers. The containment creates a sealed work zone that prevents asbestos fibres from spreading to other parts of the building. Poly sheeting, sealed seams, controlled access points, and negative air pressure all work together to protect occupants, workers, and surrounding areas.

Using the right tools inside a properly built containment allows us to remove materials efficiently while keeping fibres captured and controlled. This is not just about compliance. It is about safety, accountability, and doing the job right the first time.

Asbestos work requires training, planning, and strict procedures. At WINMAR Kootenay, we follow regulated abatement processes on every project to protect both people and property.

Smoke damage does not always mean an item is ruined.

These two coffee mugs are a great example. One shows heavy smoke residue and odour staining, the other is fully restored using ultrasonic cleaning.

At WINMAR Kootenay and WINMAR Nelson, we use ultrasonic cleaning machines to restore contents affected by fire and smoke. The process uses high frequency sound waves in a liquid bath to create microscopic bubbles. When those bubbles collapse, they gently but effectively lift soot, oils, and smoke residue from surfaces, even in tiny pores, cracks, and textures that hand cleaning cannot reach.

Because ultrasonic cleaning is non abrasive, it is ideal for delicate or detailed items like dishes, glassware, collectibles, electronics components, and personal belongings. It removes odour causing particles instead of masking them, which is critical for true smoke restoration.

After cleaning, items are properly dried and inspected before being returned to the homeowner.

When fire or smoke impacts your home, restoration is not just about the structure. It is about saving what matters most inside it.

Houseplants are more than just decorative accents; they infuse our homes with a sense of comfort and life. However, during water or fire restoration, these beloved green companions can be significantly impacted. Shifts in humidity, airflow, and restricted access to rooms all pose risks to their health if not carefully managed.

At WINMAR® Nelson, we recognize the importance of your plants in creating a welcoming environment. Our team collaborates with homeowners to strategize around preserving these precious elements, ensuring personal belongings are protected and indoor spaces are meticulously restored. Once the restoration work is complete, we strive to bring everything—finishes and flourishing greenery—back to its rightful place.

What starts as a small piece of missing stucco can turn into a major mold problem.

Stucco is designed to shed water, but when it cracks, separates, or pulls away from the wall, moisture can slip behind the surface. Once water gets trapped, it has nowhere to go. Over time it soaks into wood framing, insulation, and drywall, creating the perfect conditions for mold growth.

The danger is that this damage often stays hidden. From the outside, the issue may look minor. Behind the wall, moisture can spread quietly for months or even years before stains, odours, or health concerns appear inside the home.

Early warning signs include cracking or bulging stucco, staining near the base of walls, musty smells, or unexplained indoor humidity. Addressing these issues early can prevent extensive remediation and costly repairs later.

At WINMAR Kootenay, we see firsthand how small exterior failures can lead to significant interior damage. If you suspect moisture intrusion, early investigation can make all the difference.

Heading off this summer?

If you are leaving your Cranbrook home unattended, a little preparation can prevent big problems. Water damage, break-ins, and unnoticed issues often happen when homes sit empty.

Before you go:

• Shut off the main water supply or have someone check it regularly
• Inspect hoses, toilets, and appliances for slow leaks
• Lock windows and doors and pause deliveries
• Set timers for lights and keep your property looking lived-in
• Let a trusted neighbour know you will be away

At WINMAR Kootenay, we see firsthand how small oversights can turn into major restoration projects. Taking these simple steps can save you stress, time, and repair costs.

If the unexpected does happen, our local team is available 24/7 to help Cranbrook homeowners restore what matters.

Sun damage is not just a cosmetic issue. Over time, constant exposure to heat and UV rays can cause vinyl and composite siding to warp, buckle, or ripple like you see here.

This often happens on walls that get long hours of direct sunlight, especially when reflective surfaces like windows, metal roofs, or neighboring buildings bounce extra heat onto the siding. The material overheats, expands, and permanently deforms.

Warped siding can:

• Create gaps that let water and pests in

• Reduce your home’s insulation and energy efficiency

• Lead to hidden moisture damage behind the wall

• Turn a small exterior issue into a much bigger repair

Regular exterior inspections can catch early signs before panels fail completely. If damage is already present, it is important to identify the cause, not just replace the siding, or the problem will return.

At WINMAR Kootenay, we look beyond what you can see to protect what is underneath.

A chem sponge is one of the key tools we use to remove smoke and soot damage after a fire.

Chem sponges are made from vulcanized natural rubber. During manufacturing, the rubber is expanded to create a very open, porous structure. This sponge is used dry, not with water or cleaners.

On a technical level, smoke residue is made up of extremely fine carbon particles mixed with oily and acidic compounds. When a chem sponge is lightly pressed and wiped across a surface, the sponge creates electrostatic attraction. This pulls soot particles off the surface and traps them inside the sponge’s pores instead of spreading them around.

Because the sponge is dry, it does not dissolve oily residues or push smoke contamination deeper into porous materials like drywall, wood, or concrete. This makes it especially effective during the first stage of fire damage cleaning.

Chem sponges are typically used before any wet cleaning because introducing moisture too early can smear soot, cause staining, and lock odors into building materials. Once the sponge surface becomes dirty, it is trimmed to expose a clean section so contaminants are not redeposited.

Chem sponges work best on drywall, ceilings, framing, masonry, and trim. They play a major role in reducing smoke damage, controlling odors, and helping us restore materials instead of replacing them.

Wildfire season is becoming a reality across the Kootenays, and smoke doesn’t stop at your front door.

Even when flames are miles away, wildfire smoke can seep into your home through doors, windows, vents, and HVAC systems, impacting indoor air quality and your health. Fine particulate matter can aggravate asthma, allergies, heart conditions, and cause headaches, fatigue, and respiratory irritation.

We’ve put together a practical, homeowner-friendly guide outlining 7 steps you can take to help smoke-proof your Cranbrook home this summer. From simple sealing and filtration upgrades to smart HVAC adjustments, these steps can significantly reduce smoke infiltration and help keep the air inside your home cleaner when outdoor conditions deteriorate.

If smoke does get inside, lingering odours and airborne contaminants can embed themselves in soft furnishings, insulation, and ductwork. Knowing when prevention is enough — and when professional cleaning or remediation is needed — can make a big difference.
