Good Morning Facebook Friends!
I have a question for you:
How do YOU use Facebook? π€
Think about this one. Do you aimlessly scroll every few minutes? Do you check news or reports? Perhaps you have a business you are trying to build / create? Or do you just share memes with everyone and enjoy the few minutes of chuckles?
I actually sat and thought of this this morning. I am a combination of ALL of the above! But let's look at Facebook in another way:
It's a Virtual City!
When you log in to Facebook, you step out of your house. First thing you do is check your notifications. Ah yes. Good ol' mailbox! Let's go for a walk! You open it up and see that your neighbour, Fred, was at the store last night and got into an argument with someone so he left a huge rant about it, so you add a comment and send it off. What else in here? Oh yay! There's stuff on sale at your favourite grocery store! Better check that later. What else! OMG that's hilarious! Someone sent you a picture that makes you cry laughing. Gotta resend that to others!
But now what? You're out in this Virtual City. You've checked your mailbox. It's empty. You've got a few more of those pictures you need to mail out. OH HEY! Dave is messaging you! "Hey Dave! Check this funny picture!" *shoves in face* Dave: "hahaha that's hilarious! Hey. Just wanted to ask you, have you ever considered a career selling this?" You get handed one of Dave's flyers. You take the flyer and say the same thing that you say to everyone else: "I'll check it later, I'm in a rush right now. Gotta go!". You won't check it. It's already filed under spam or you dropped it to the ground in this city. WAIT!! More pictures!! Gotta check them out!!
And it keeps going. The City is filled with people running around posting street art, throwing garbage and flyers and spray painting walls with images and jokes. In between this are the business owners that constantly have to scrape things and peel off these Flyers and interact with the citizens of this Virtual world we've created. Yes, this IS the basics of this social media platform, but are you actually using it to the best of your ability or are you aimlessly running around sticking up posters on windows, doors, fences etc?! Don't get me wrong here, there's an audience for everything, but are you focused on things that keep YOUR goals going or are you lost aimlessly in this City?
When I thought of that this morning, I'm guilty as heck for this! I've created many places in this City. I walk out that door every morning and yes, I'll shout Good Morning to everyone at 5am. But then I'll go litter people with random crap they have to sift through. Pictures that will distract for a little while and then that person is out looking for their next distraction... it's an addiction! For me, as much as them!
Let's try looking at Facebook as that city in a more productive way. This morning, I stuck my head out the door and thought: ,"sure. Let's check my mailbox and then go find something motivational to share while I have a coffee. I walked down the street and popped in on a group that has space to share things to DO together. I shared a virtual pizza party with them! And now, I'm back here again, at my business front, leaving this message so others can read it. Perhaps it gets buried. Perhaps it's shared. Who knows?! But in 10 minutes time... there's going to be more of those flyers and pictures coming along to distract again...
Stay safe everyone! β€οΈ
