This isn't unique to NYC. The difference in NYC is that police acknowledge it and are working with retailers. In many jurisdictions in Atlantic Canada, this is viewed as a nuisance call to where some officers have created a minimum value stolen in order to charge. While that is on contradiction with the CCC, the discretionary powers of the officers prevail.

The NYPD says shoplifting in the city is at its highest levels and that thieves are targeting a lot of drugstores in particular. Rite Aid recently closed a l...

Qualified Security Matters

The federal government last week passed legislation to prohibit the harassment and intimidation of health care workers and patients. A continual problem, risk of harm to healthcare workers is in dire need of addressing.

If incidents are occurring in your facility, examine the response, or lack thereof.

Good to see trained security that can act.

Far too often we hear of inadequately trained security unable to act with those providing care being victimized.

An expensive brochure filled with buzzwords does little in terms of real safety.

With all the talk as of late re "law enforcement" colleges, we thought we would offer an alternative.

1. APPS offers Defensive Tactics, VCCRI, SGT (Gracie LE), NUFF, OC and ICS 100/200. These are, at minimum, nationally recognized certifications that are duplicate to policing. This training is free. Unlike some security companies, you get and keep the certificate. Our instructors come from diverse academic backgrounds that include policing, corrections, industry and most importantly, have taught at both academy and college environments.

2. APPS also offers specialty training, all at a reduced cost. Krav Maga, Range Officer, CQB and a host of fi****ms courses are all available.

3. APPS is proud to have had more of its people progress to law enforcement careers than any regional company. In fact, we outpace some colleges. Our most recent was a few weeks back (photo).

A job in security is a good place to start. It shares principles, gains valuable engagement experience and introduces you to the criminal justice system.

Saying that, there are some very good options within the college setting. Before you commit to spending all that money, do your research. We have colleges who've sent us solid people who were trained well. We've also had colleges who've made up their own certificates, which we simply won't recognize. Our rule of thumb is the certificate must be the exact as offered in am academy setting. Too much is at stake.

Call of male in distress.
Intoxicated, unconscious, minor injury.
Engaged, obtained parents information.
Assisted move to shade.
Quickly grabbed a bottle of water at the store.
Safe.
Father took him home.

This is was qualified security looks like.
Where some would simply call the police and tie up both officer and ambulance resources, training allows for proper assessment and determining the best option.

Quite a few years back APPS became the first institution in the Maritimes use body cameras for frontline services.

Since then, Fredericton, Miramichi and Kentville Police Service have all adopted the technology. In the coming months we can expect more departments to follow suit.
