Protein continues to trend in the media, but not all of the information out there is accurate. As nutrition professionals, we play an important role in addressing misconceptions and guiding patients and communities toward evidence-based recommendations.

Myth: Older adults need less protein because they are less active.
Fact: Protein needs actually increase with age to help maintain muscle mass and prevent frailty.
Inadequate protein intake in older adults can contribute to declines in lean body mass, increased frailty risk, delayed wound healing, and impaired immune function. Despite this, protein intake often decreases with age due to factors like reduced appetite, limited resources, changes in dentition, and environmental barriers.
Adequate protein intake supports strength, mobility, and independence—key components of healthy aging.
đź’ˇ Tip: Aim to include a source of protein at every meal, such as eggs, dairy, meat, fish, tofu, or legumes.
