The Battle of Mackinac Island (pronounced Mackinaw) was a British victory in the War of 1812. Before the war, Fort Mackinac had been an important American trading post in the straits between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. It was important for its influence and control over the Native American tribes....

First Nation Genealogy – Manitoulin Island (Mnidoo Mnis)

I'm exploring my Indigenous roots connected to Manitoulin Island, also known as Mnidoo Mnis ("Spirit Island") in Anishinaabemowin. This land has deep cultural and ancestral meaning for the Anishinaabe peoples—especially the Ojibwe (Chippewa), Odawa (Ottawa), and Pottawatomi nations, who are part of the historic Council of Three Fires.

First Nations Communities on or near the island:

Wikwemikong Unceded Territory (never signed a treaty)

M'Chigeeng First Nation

Sheguiandah First Nation

Zhiibaahaasing First Nation

Sheshegwaning First Nation

Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation

Whitefish River First Nation (mainland, but closely connected)

These communities each have unique family histories, many of which are preserved through band membership records, oral traditions, and church or mission archives.

Genealogy Resources I'm exploring:

Band offices (membership lists & family trees)

Library and Archives Canada (treaty and census records)

Catholic and Anglican church records (baptisms, marriages, burials)

Wikwemikong Heritage Organization & local cultural centres

Elders and oral history — vital sources of living memory

Historical Note: Most of Manitoulin Island was included in the Robinson-Huron Treaty of 1850, except Wikwemikong, which remained unceded.

If you have connections to any of these communities or are researching similar family lines, feel free to reach out or share stories. Our ancestors are waiting to be remembered.

Summer is well underway, and I haven't logged on to this page in a while...I'm still here, though.
I may be moving to my home community, so this page is put on pause until I get things settled.

So this, I just found out, is "THE FIRST METIS"!! Eufrosine Magdelaine Nicolet was born about 1630, in Canada (boundaries didnt even exist then) as the daughter of Jean Nicolet and Sauuagesse or Gisis Bahmahmaadjimiwin. So because this Jean dude had a baby with this "unknown native woman", they call her the 1st metis woman!! 🥸

Discover life events, stories and photos about Eufrosine Magdelaine Nicolet (1630–1689) of Canada.

So in my research in First Nation history, I'm finding that the Library and Archives Canada has incorrectly labelled all records that have to do with "half-breeds" aka "FIRST NATION PEOPLE MIXED WITH SETTLERS" as "metis". If you come across these in your searches, please notify LAC. I'm not sure why they're labelled as metis, I think that limits the search capability when you're actually searching for First Nation people! Again, "half-breeds" are incorrectly labelled as "metis".

We are following up on calls for action by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The calls for action exist to promote truth, healing and reconciliation.

Scrip was a document, warrant, or certificate that entitled the holder to a certain allotment of crown lands in what is now Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. These allowed the Department of the Interior to grant land without specifying the actual piece of land involved. At various times, they issued it to:

--Métis residents (called Half-Breed Scrip in the records of the Department of the Interior)
--Original White Settlers
--members of the militia and the North-West Mounted Police
This collection includes applications, affidavits, case files, powers of attorney, certificates, receipts, correspondence and other scrip documents found in the records of the Dominion Lands Branch of the Department of the Interior.
