The Ontario Association of the Appraisal Institute of Canada held its AGM and conference and at Casino Rama this past week and I had the honour of becoming President of the AIC-ON. I am looking forward to the opportunity to travel across the province to meet with members as well as lead the Board of Directors in all of our tasks this coming year!

It was a busy day with 6 meetings and a reception but it was great to meet with MPPs and minister’s staff who were all very receptive to our presentations and also to wander the halls of these beautiful, old government buildings!

Appraisers are an important part of many real estate transactions, as well as in estate planning/settlement, matrimonial proceedings and many other areas. There are only about 2600 appraisers in Ontario (compare this to 82,000 real estate agents and 18,000 mortgage agents/brokers). Affordable access to the data we need to do our job has been an issue for appraisers for many years. We are a small group and are easily ignored by the data providers but we are trying to change that.

Ontario Needs Appraisers to provide valuation services on all types of properties including residential, commercial, and more. However, the current data regulations have created steep paywalls presenting a financial burden to Ontarians seeking to sell their home.
