Staff Picks: Kendall + Somenos Traminer

Kendall’s pick is our 2024 Somenos Traminer—and with Thanksgiving around the corner, the timing couldn’t be better.

Floral and expressive, with notes of pear, spice and jasmine tea, this w**e has the freshness and texture to handle everything happening around a Thanksgiving table. Think roast turkey, stuffing, squash, roasted root vegetables and all those savoury, herb-filled sides.

Somewhere in the middle of harvest.

The days are starting early, the cellar is busy, and the vineyard seems to change a little every morning.

Some fruit has made its way off the vines and into the w**ery, while the rest is still out here—ripening, waiting, and being watched closely for its turn.

Harvest has its own rhythm. Pick, press, clean, repeat. Long days, sticky hands, plenty of coffee, and a lot happening behind the scenes.

And every once in a while, a morning like this reminds us to look up and take it all in.

October Cellar Selection: Pinot Noir

One grape. Three vintages. Three expressions of Averill Creek.

This October, our Cellar Selection is all about Pinot Noir, bringing together three vintages that offer a chance to explore the grape through different seasons and stages of evolution.

2024 Estate Pinot Noir — Vibrant and youthful, with fine tannins, textured acidity, and the freshness we love about Vancouver Island Pinot Noir.

2023 Somenos Pinot Noir — Darker and savoury, with alpine blackberry, dark cherry, cigar box, freshly cut fennel, and a touch of cinnamon.

2022 Somenos Pinot Noir — Pretty and perfumed, with fresh red and dark fruit, savoury spice, persistent acidity, and ripe, seamless tannins.

A little taste of the cellar.

Our 2017 Somenos Pinot Gris is showing beautifully right now, with bright acidity, impressive structure, and plenty of freshness still at its core.

Makrut lime and green pineapple lead, while notes of cashew and subtle kerosene bring a creamy, savoury complexity that has developed with time.

Our Somenos Tawny begins with fortified blackberry juice, cask-aged and mellowed in seasoned French oak through a Solera-style system for over five years.
Luxurious and sweet, yet balanced by tartness, it layers dried fruit, nuts, and citrus zest with rich flavours of raisin, spice, apricot, and marzipan.

A fantastic pairing - Stilton cheese.
The Tawny’s concentrated sweetness meets the salty, savoury bite of blue cheese beautifully, while its acidity keeps all that richness in balance.

But don’t stop at the cheese board. Pour it over vanilla ice cream for an easy dessert, serve it over ice, or add a splash of soda for a lighter, refreshing way to enjoy it.

Our 2015 Somenos Pinot Noir is currently available in our reserve flight—and after over a decade in bottle, it’s a beautiful opportunity to experience how our w**es evolve with time.

Bold and expressive, with aromas of smoky dark fruit, to***co leaf, and caramel, this Pinot Noir is lush and silky on the palate, with layers of sweet black cherry, spicy plum chutney, and savoury herb.
