In 1997 the RCMP teamed up with First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers. The idea was an Indigenous treatment centre in BC. They called it Vision Quest. A Journey of Hope.

A female elder from the Paul family at Tsartlip gifted them a drum song in the sweat. That song travelled 1000 miles by canoe from Ksan Village on the Skeena River down the coast, stopping at every village. It ended in Victoria at the 1997 North American Indigenous Games.

Calvin Swustus paddled that journey. He still shares the elder’s drum song with RCMP members, pictured here at KHC, and keeps teaching it.

Iskum Investments is advancing an important study for a modern wood processing facility on the British Columbia coast.
This First Nations led consortium is comparing three coastal locations with support from a $1.275 million contribution through the Government of Canada’s Indigenous Forestry Initiative.

The facility would process second growth logs, create more value from coastal fibre right here in Canada, support pulp operations, and generate hundreds of lasting jobs across the region. At full capacity, it could sustain over 700 positions while strengthening communities and the broader coastal economy.

No site has been chosen yet. This careful study will guide the next steps as Nations move from holding tenure to owning manufacturing capacity.

August has been full of heart at the Khowutzun Heritage Centre.

We celebrated the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Alphonse, our first in over a decade. The day felt warm and full of care, made possible by everyone who helped prepare the space. Thank you all.

Harry Manx brought a wonderful blues night with great energy and stories that had everyone smiling. People left saying thank you, and it felt so special.

The next wedding is on August 29th, and the next concert will be Alexandr Misko on October 7th. So fortunate that we get to share these moments.

🌎 At the River's Edge Project, sustainability is a key priority from start to finish. Rather than sending valuable materials for disposal, we carefully extracted, and repurposed reusable granular materials wherever possible.

🌎 By reclaiming and reusing these resources, we were able to reduce unsuitable waste, maximize the value of existing materials, and support a more environmentally responsible approach to construction.
