It's pretty embarrassing when the experts the BC government hired are having to publicly call them out for their lack of action. Talk and log, talk and log, talk and log continues in "supernatural" BC. Go to Chek news to see the full story.

"The final report from the Provincial Forestry Advisory Council says trust has been eroded by inconsistent forest data controlled largely by industry and government, and calls for the creation of a transparent forest inventory based on laser measurements with a new independent body to manage the information.

The report says there also needs to be an arm's-length assessment of high-value old growth trees to reduce conflict and ensure everyone is working from the same reliable data."

I didn't go to many bear dens in 2025, one that I was most looking forward to revisiting was a beautiful den in the base of a Douglas-fir on the Sunshine Coast. I first visited the den in 2022, it had likely been used by a female to give birth to cubs the previous winter by the looks of all the swordfern-lined post-den beds nearby. The tree was a veteran, a handful of big firs had been left behind when the area was first harvested. The surrounding stand was to be harvested but the den was being protected in a Wildlife Tree Retention Area and was 50 m from the edge of the clearcut, it seemed a good prescription. However, the stand around the WTRA was harvested over the winter of 2023-2024 and by the time I visited it in September 2025 the den tree had blown down. It was disheartening to find such a beautiful den tree, in an area that probably lacks dens, blew down so quickly. We need to do more to protect these trees that are critical habitat features for black bears!

Randene Neill it's your constituency and your government failing to protect these trees.

Hopefully BC bears will be lounging about stuffed full of salmon in the coming months like this Alaskan bear. Salmon returns are looking fantastic as they recover after the removal of fish farms!

We had a lovely week at Pacific Sounds Lodge watching bears and sea otters and having the most fabulous food! We finally got around to trying snorkeling in our BC waters and it was great, we didn't freeze at all (wearing 5 mm wetsuits) and can't wait to do more! A great group of people and lots of interesting conversations.😊

Good to see some coverage about the lack of a scientific population estimate for BC black bears! They could retitle it "why no one in BC had the faintest idea how many black bears there are"... Go to cbc website to read story.

Spring cuteness as the Lake Tahoe moms and cubs start leaving their "dens" under houses... sad that there are no natural dens but cute footage nevertheless!
