Not our normal job of being out in the bush, but happy to help out.

It’s STEWARDSHIP SATURDAY and today we are sharing that our Monarch Meadow is one step closer to reality!

This week Eccles Forestry Ltd tilled the Monarch Meadow field prior to spreading milkweed-centric seed mix and incorporating seed mix into the soil with a seed roller. Just in time for an insulating blanket of snow!

Stay tuned to see what pops up this spring! 🌱

Some shots from our teams out during site visits for the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program. Even though this year's deadlines have passed, we have still been incredibly busy enrolling new properties for the tax incentives for next year.

We had a great time out at the Hullet Provincial Wildlife Area with the Friends of Hullet and the OWA.

This is an Emerald Ash Borer found by Rory, our summer Forest Tech, while working in a woodlot in West Grey.

The infested trees on this woodlot are being utilized for firewood for a Maple Syrup operation within the same footprint this invasive was found.

Anyone who has started noticing their Ash trees have not leafed out, or have begun loosing bark via woodpeckers, this little one is most likely the culprit.

This year we participated in the pilot project with 3D printed traps for Hemlock Wooly Agelid we had placed in Hemlock groves near the Rocky Saugeen River. Our trap is now on its way back to the Invasive Species Centre while we keep our fingers crossed they find this invasive hasn't made its way here yet.

Eastern White Cedar prevents germination of other trees, so in order to get new growth and diversity, you need to plant it!

This site had a recent cedar harvest, opening up enough light for us to plant Red Oak, Bur Oak, Black Cherry, and White Pine into the openings. Adding an important future food source for wildlife.

The other goal was to ensure flood control long after the Cedar die out. So new growth is essential!

Stand conversions will be the topic we are talking about today! This forest in Simcoe County had a literal carpet of young Red Oak and Bur Oak regeneration throughout the forest floor, just waiting for someone to let the sunlight in so it can grow!

We went through and marked enough Soft Maple and Poplar to create the canopy openings needed by the Oak to thrive.

Was this a heavier harvest? Yes. But an absolutely nessessary one to reach the end goal of an Oak and Pine forest.

Oak and Pine were both harvested and targeted heavily historically, and we want to see these forest types restored.

Wildlife, prepare to thrive! We extended a heavily traversed corridor of Sugar Maple, Red Oak, and White Ash by planting White Pine to complement the already existing hardwoods and a buffer of Norway Spruce on the outside.

Forests Ontario 50 Million Tree Program funded the extension of the corridor along these two fields. 🌳
