Child passenger safety is a family affair - make sure everyone in your car wears their seat belt the whole trip every trip. Other safety tips for your passengers who are out of car seats and booster seats include:

1. Adjust your headrest so that there is support to at least the top of the ears. Support to the top of the head, when possible, is better.
2. If your seat belt can be adjusted to control the height the shoulder belt is placed at, adjust it to make sure the shoulder belt is crossing the mid-point of your shoulder.
3. Whenever possible, drive at least 10 inches away from the steering wheel to give room for the airbag. Utilizing the features of a telescoping steering wheel can assist with this.
4. Keep your vehicle seats in a more upright position. Less recline is safer for you and your passengers.
5. Drive free of distractions. Distracted driving is such a giant factor in road safety that it is moving in to a similar spot as drunk driving - it's really that important to put your phone away when driving.

Have you ever wondered how long your big kid needs to ride in a booster for? Keep your big kid in a properly fitting booster until he fits the adult seat belt properly without it.

Use the 5-step test to determine if the belt fits properly without a booster:

1. Does the child sit all the way back against the back seat?
2. Do the child's knees bend comfortably at the edge of the vehicle seat?
3. Does the shoulder belt cross the shoulder between the neck and arm?
4. Is the lap belt as low as possible, touching the thighs?
5. Can the child stay seated like this for the whole trip?

A booster will offer your child the best protection until the answer is yes to each of these questions. Most children are over 9 yrs old before they pass the 5-step test.

Having a hard time deciding if your child passes the 5-step test? Please email us or message us and we'll be happy to provide one-on-one assistance.

Did you know that rear-facing protects the most fragile parts of your growing child's body and allows their car seat to do the hard work? Keep your little one rear-facing in a seat they fit correctly until at least age 2.
