It was an honour to speak this morning at the Indigenous Energy Ownership & Governance, West on the topic, “What Global Partners Must Know Before Working With Indigenous Communities.”

I appreciated the opportunity to share perspectives on respectful engagement, cultural understanding and the importance of building genuine, long-term relationships with Indigenous communities.

It was also a sincere pleasure connecting with my new friend Donna St. Louis, National Lead, Indigenous Business and Inclusive Trade at Export Development Canada (EDC).

It was an enjoyable time at the Indigenous Energy Ownership & Governance, West Forum today. Great catching up with friends Dale Swampy, Karen Ogen, Annmarie Rebecca, and to connect with Robert Williamson and the .

It was also a true pleasure listening to Ted Bauer, Steve Berna, Booker Cornea, Scott Alanen, and Clint Davis share on the topic of "Funding the Deal: How Nations Access Capital and What Investors Need to See." Very insightful!

What We Heard. What We Found. Why the Work Must Continue.

The Indigenous Trailblazers Hub has been reviewing the Indigenous business and economic-development landscape to understand where meaningful gaps remain.

Our research confirmed that Canada has experienced organizations delivering important services in business development, financing, governance, training, procurement and sector-specific support.

The issue is not necessarily the absence of services. It is the fragmented pathway between those services, the businesses seeking support and the opportunities they are working to access.

Several key gaps were consistently identified:
• Indigenous businesses are not always visible to buyers and potential partners.
• Business information is spread across disconnected directories, spreadsheets, programs and personal networks.
• Entrepreneurs and community-owned businesses may struggle to determine where to begin, which services are appropriate or whether they qualify.
• Procurement opportunities may arrive too late to build partnerships, address capacity needs and prepare competitive bids.
• Business-readiness needs are not always identified before an opportunity is presented.
• Introductions and referrals are frequently made without coordinated follow-up.
• Relationships created through events do not always progress into contracts, financing or lasting partnerships.
• Indigenous businesses may repeatedly provide the same information while retaining limited control over how it is stored, shared or used.
• Buyers, governments and funders can struggle to locate verified Indigenous capacity by region, territory, industry and capability.
• Results—including bids, contracts, investment, employment and business growth—are not consistently tracked after connections are made.

Our research points to one overarching need:

The grassroots Indigenous business community requires more than another event, directory or short-term program. It requires continuity—a coordinated pathway from visibility and readiness to relationships, opportunities and measurable outcomes.

This is not about replacing organizations already doing valuable work. It is about strengthening connections among existing resources and making the economic-development landscape easier to navigate.

The Indigenous Trailblazers Summit demonstrated what is possible when Indigenous businesses, communities and allies come together through collaborative effort, collaborative investment, mutual benefit and mutual growth.

The next chapter will be introduced on October 6, 2026, at the Indigenous Trailblazers Hub Fundraising Gala—Honouring Indigenous CEO Leadership.
