New Regulations Impacting Corporate Culture

1️⃣ Last week Ontario implemented the right to disconnect

2️⃣ BC recently introduced paid sick time

3️⃣ Federally-regulated companies have introduced the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation as a paid holiday

These regulatory changes are more than simply new policies, they signal societal and workplace shifts that, even if they do not apply in your jurisdiction, are worth considering. Taken together, these workplace policies impact your culture, your employees’ well-being and organizational performance.

It’s been a week since Business Transitions Forum - Edmonton wrapped up, which Omni MCA participated in as a sponsor, chair (Cheryl) and facilitator (Dena). We were thrilled that so many of our clients also attended, many joining us from out of province. We’d like to share some key points that stuck out for us, and them:

1️⃣ 116,000 businesses will be for sale in Canada over the next five years.

2️⃣ 70% of businesses fail to sell.

3️⃣ Buyers are placing greater and greater emphasis on company culture, leadership and technically skilled employees. These can be significant drivers of value.

4️⃣ “If you dread going to work, you’ve missed your peak selling opportunity.”

5️⃣ Maybe your family business legacy is to support your children to build their own dreams, not have them continue with your dream (the business). Either way, we learned it is best to have these tough conversations early.

6️⃣ Buyers want to see that you have a well functioning business management system that will continue to operate after you have exited.

7️⃣ The most successful transitions are well planned several years in advance. (This one is an oldie, but a goodie.)

This raises some important questions for today’s business owners.

❓ How will you ensure your business is attractive to the most qualified and discerning buyers – those who will continue to steward your business after your exit?

❓ What are you doing to plan your exit? As noted by one of the speakers, “Hope is not a strategy.”

So much more information was shared and we’re already looking forward to future BTFs. If you attended, what nuggets did you take away?

Just under a month left to take advantage of early bird pricing (35% discount) AND use our sponsor code OMNI25 for the Business Transitions Forum in Edmonton (connect with Cheryl for a discount code for upcoming events in Calgary, Halifax, Toronto or Vancouver).

The program looks great, and includes a 2nd generation family business session facilitated by Dena (and featuring some of our great clients!). Cheryl will be chairing the event, including the Lunch Fireside Chat with a business owner who has recently gone through a transition and the final panel of the day - Exit Stories: Good, Bad and Different.

🌎🌍 Webinars are great, but we love panel discussions because they are better at fostering an exchange of diverse viewpoints among experts, rather than a dry presentation of material.

This panel will definitely bring variety to the conversation, and Cheryl is excited to share her thoughts on international trade from the perspective of working with many, many small- and mid-sized businesses throughout her career. The challenges they face often aren't specific to exporting and are actually a function of their overall organizational structure and direction, which aren't sufficiently developed to support international expansion.

Join Cheryl and her fellow panelists from the Calgary Economic Development, RBC Global Trade and EDC on March 2nd for this event hosted by the Alberta Ireland Trade Association.

Omni MCA is very proud to be one of the sponsors for the Business Transitions Forum coming to Edmonton in May, with Omni MCA Partner, Cheryl Lockhart, chairing the event. Cheryl recently spoke with BTF organizers to discuss why Edmonton entrepreneurs should plan to attend and talk about the local challenges and opportunities and the overall outlook for the Edmonton region.

Reach out to Dena or Cheryl to learn more about the event. Both attended the Vancouver Forum last month and as always, it was an extremely valuable learning event.

Working under the management and leadership of ClearThink™ Group (Pierre Cormier and Keleigh Cormier, FCMC CAC), Omni MCA is proud to have been part of the project team that was recently honoured with the 2021 Silver Constantinus International Award. The winning project was ClearThink™ Business Coaching Program - Covid-19 Business Resiliency Strategy Town of Sylvan Lake, and Cheryl and Dena provided consulting services to several small businesses in the areas of human resources, strategy, business development, and marketing.

The Constantinus International Award is an accolade put forward by The International Council of Management Consulting Institutes (ICMCI) and is described as, “a much sought-after decoration for outstanding consulting performances” and “an established quality seal for knowledge based services all over the world.”

This is the second Global Silver award for Omni MCA. In 2018, Cheryl first partnered with ClearThink™ and won for the Back to Business Coaching Program with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo following the wildfires in 2016.

**The Top 10 Things We've Learned in 10 Years**

We’ve been so blessed to work with great colleagues and clients over the past 10 years and have learned much from these relationships. We’ve taken some time to reflect on those learnings, and want to share them with you as part of our anniversary celebration.

1️⃣ Wear Our Client’s Jersey
It’s not enough to be smart and offer value. Our clients are looking for true, collaborative partners. They want us to “wear their jersey.” This was a phrase shared by former football player, Pinball Clemonns, at a CMC conference Cheryl and Dick attended a few years ago and it’s really stuck. We can’t just sit on the sidelines and watch, we need to be a super-fan, wearing the team jersey, buying into team culture and, sometimes, being a direct teammate.

2️⃣ High Client Satisfaction isn’t Always that Satisfying
The vast majority of our projects result in satisfied or very satisfied clients and we can still feel that we haven’t made enough impact. It’s something we ask ourselves regularly – What impact are we truly making, beyond client satisfaction? Did what we do really matter?

3️⃣ Change Management is Huge
Given #2, we’ve learned that it’s not enough to provide a great strategy, plan or advice. Often, we need to guide our clients towards their goals. Change management, even if we don’t use that exact terminology, is a large part of what we do.

4️⃣ Walk the Talk
We follow our own advice. We have a strategic plan, we meet regularly, we live our purpose (Let’s see it through) and we demonstrate our values. These things are important for our clients and for us. Truly, it’s why we came together in the first place, 10 years ago.

5️⃣ Trust the Process
It’s not always easy to convey the importance of what we do and expected results. We’re grateful for clients who trust the process and trust us to guide them through to their goals. Success depends more on the client’s management team than us and a client who is committed, focused and stays the course, even when it’s difficult, equates to successful outcomes.

6️⃣ Be Curious
We don’t have all the answers (and that’s okay!). But we do have questions, lots of questions. Our clients don’t always know what they need, what they want or where they’re going but by asking questions, we can help them get there.

7️⃣ Vulnerability Goes a Long Way
To truly make the greatest impact, we need clients to be honest and introspective about the challenges they are facing, requiring a certain degree of their own vulnerability. It’s a lot easier for them if we’re true to who we are as well. Sometimes we need to step out of our comfort zone to do this.

8️⃣ Have Courage to Have Difficult Conversations
"Tell clients what they need to hear, not what they want to hear.” It’s an oft-repeated phrase at Omni MCA, one shared by Dick from the very beginning, and still holds true.

9️⃣ Be True to Yourself
Every consultant in this world has to find their own style, and we’re not for everyone or every project (that’s also okay!) but we still want clients to succeed and will do whatever we can to connect you to the right resources - which leads to our last point.

🔟 Build Community
It’s a lot more fun being a consultant when you work with other like-minded consultants. It’s less isolating and we are able to bring much more to our clients as a result. Like working with clients over the long-term, working with our colleagues for years benefits everyone through trusting relationships and building better, together.

What have you learned from Omni MCA in the Past 10 Years? We'd love to hear from you!
