On August 27, 2025 @ 6:45pm, under a beautiful blue sky the Heede crane was parked and tied down for the last time. Bob McSorley had the honor to complete the final run. Bob has been with Millar for over 47 years and has operated the Heede since it’s commissioning in 1981. A truly legendary accomplishment for Bob and an equally impressive story to add to the Millar Western history books! Bob's dedication and service to the company stands as an impressive part of both his legacy and the history of Millar Western.

The new crane has completed the initial commissioning phases and has successfully completed load testing. Trial runs with the new crane will begin mid-September following the laydown of the Heede.

At Millar Western, we are dedicated to building strong, resilient communities throughout the year, and the holiday season gives us a meaningful chance to connect with and support those around us. This year, we expanded our efforts to include the communities surrounding our Quesnel River and Slave Lake pulp mills, ensuring our impact reaches even further.

In 2024, we proudly contributed over $100,000 to organizations making a meaningful difference in people’s lives. This included special donations in December to Edmonton, Whitecourt, Quesnel, and Slave Lake Food Banks, the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation Christmas Hamper program, Tennille’s Hope, and Soaring Eagle Support Society. Additionally, we were pleased to assist local organizations like the Northern Haven Society, Whitecourt Christmas Hamper, Youth Empowerment and Support Services (YESS), United Way, and University Hospital Foundation.

In addition to these contributions, Millar Western employees showed incredible generosity by giving back in meaningful ways. From donating toys to local Christmas hampers to sharing company-provided Christmas turkeys with families in need, their kindness brought warmth and hope to many during the holiday season.

We are deeply thankful to our employees for their dedication, kindness, and strong sense of community that make everything we do possible. From our Millar Western family to yours, we wish you a joyful and safe holiday season, a very Merry Christmas, and a happy, healthy 2025!

Millar Western is proud to continue supporting the educational journeys of post-secondary students from the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation through the Alexis/Millar Western Scholarship Program. Since its launch in 2005, the program has awarded up to six $1,000 scholarships annually, contributing a total of $109,000 to date toward empowering future leaders and professionals.

This year, we are thrilled to recognize six outstanding recipients: Ryan Taje, Montana Kootney, Tytanna Rain, Teagan Sayer, Carter Braun, and Jaurie Alexis. Their hard work, commitment, and aspirations are truly inspiring, and we wish them every success as they pursue their studies.

Below are moments captured from the scholarship presentations. Congratulations to all, and best wishes for a rewarding and successful year ahead!

Celebrating the achievements of our employees is always a special moment, especially when it comes to long-service milestones that showcase the true foundation of our company: the knowledge, experience, talent, and dedication of our team. This week, we had the honor of recognizing Dan LaValley for an incredible 40 years of outstanding service. True to his humble nature, Dan preferred a low-key celebration, showcasing his preference for quiet dedication over being in the spotlight. Congratulations, Dan — your dedication inspires us all. Here’s to many more years of safe and exceptional work!

One of the highlights of our work is sharing our passion for what we do and how we do it—especially when it means helping students prepare for sustainable careers in forestry. This week, the team at our Whitecourt pulp mill welcomed over 40 students from NAIT’s Forest Technology program for presentations and a guided tour of the mill. The students made the most of this opportunity to dive into the manufacturing side of forestry. It’s always a pleasure to see familiar faces in the group, and we’re excited to watch these bright, motivated individuals shape the future of our industry—whether they join us at Millar Western or become our partners and friends in other organizations!

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada. This day is observed on June 21st every year as it coincides with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Today we join many others in celebrating the many diverse cultures, unique heritage, and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Metis and Inuit people.

Recognizing Mental Health Week – A Call to be Kind

This year, Mental Health Week is all about compassion! At Millar Western, we are shining a spotlight on something that’s close to our hearts: mental well-being. This week we are starting conversations, breaking stigmas, and showing support and kindness for each other.

It feels as good to give compassion as it is to receive it. Compassion is not just a temporary emotion; it’s a guiding principle that inspires us to reach out and make a difference in those around us. Compassion can be directed towards individuals, groups, or even towards yourself. By increasing compassion we can improve connections, promote positive emotions, and minimize job related stress.

Let’s come together as a community this Mental Health Week to embrace compassion in our daily lives and strive to make kindness our default setting!

Pictured is our Slave Lake team members kicking off Mental Health week by greeting people with a friendly face and treats. You will also find Mental Health Supports for Alberta and British Columbia.

We are pleased to announce that the acquisition of the Quesnel River Pulp mill, Slave Lake Pulp mill, related woodlands, sales and logistics teams closed as of Saturday April 20, 2024. Our joint Pulp Integration Team worked diligently over the weekend to transition key operating and information systems to the Millar Western IT platform. The team continues to work on business systems and business process procedures with our new colleagues to ensure an orderly transition. We are very excited to welcome these high performing team members to Millar Western! In the weeks ahead we will turn our focus to developing value creation plans to maximize the synergies between the operations. Here are few photos from the weekend.
