I hate to say it but... ❄️🇨🇦 Winter is coming! And Safety Steve would like to remind everyone that you'll soon have put your winter tires on and start wearing your "winter driving cap"!

One of the main issues winter poses in many parts of the country is poor driving conditions. According to the Department of Transportation, winter weather conditions are responsible for over 192,000 injuries and 2,200 deaths each year on the road. Outside injury and loss of life, winter weather conditions are responsible for millions of dollars in property damage incidents. The hazards created by winter weather make it hard for even the most experienced drivers to operate a vehicle safely.

To help keep you on your toes, here's a good visual to help you remember how to react to sliding in winter road conditions.

Since September is National Preparedness Month for our neighbors down south, we thought it to be the perfect opportunity to refresh and reassess an Emergency Response Plan. Severe weather events, natural disasters, acts of violence, and public health crises have kept us on our toes and reminded us of the value of advanced preparation.

6 Steps to Effective Emergency Preparedness
1. Determine the threats to your organization
2. Develop an emergency plan
3. Build and maintain resource kits
4. Run drills and exercises
5. Enhance communication
6. Prepare Beyond the Workplace

Happy 1st day of the hottest month of the year!!

Did you know most left-handed people generally have to adapt to awkward positions to accomplish a job as most tools are made for right-handed people?

This kind of adaptation can cause what is called a Musculoskeletal Disorder (MSD for short!) - which are injuries of the muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, joints, cartilage, or spinal discs.

MSD's can be caused by forceful exertion, awkward postures, repetitive movements, contact pressure, vibrations, and low/high temperatures.

Since MSD's can greatly effect our quality of life, it's important to be mindful about preventing these kinds of injuries. Prevention can be practiced by methods such as job rotation, using ergonomic tools, and distributing work more evenly. Both employers and employees must work together in order for prevention to be successful 🦺💪

Here at Pro Inspection, we're big on safety. We also have a Safety Officer (Steve) who loves sharing his safety knowledge!

This months safety corner topic is... WHMIS! Something most of us were taught as early as Grade 6 and as such, we think we know it all! 😂 SO here's a quick refresher to help you stay safe while working!

What are the worker's responsibilities under the WHMIS program?
As a worker, your responsibilities may include to:
• Participate in WHMIS education and training.
• Follow instructions and safe work procedures.
• Be familiar with all hazardous products you are handling or to which you may be exposed (such as during a spill or fire). Do not use a product unless you have been trained in safe work procedures.
• Ensure that labels are in good condition. Do not use products without labels.
• Know how to access the SDSs and understand the information on the SDS.
• Ask for help if you have questions.
• Report any concerns.

June's Safety Corner topic is about... heat-related illnesses!

It's important to know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke so we can help keep each other safe.

Heat Exhaustion
When the body loses excessive water and salt, usually due to sweating, heat exhaustion can occur. Signs and symptoms include:
• Pale, cool or clammy skin
• Muscle cramps (especially for those working or exercising outdoors in high
temperatures)
• Fatigue, weakness, or exhaustion
• Headache, dizziness, or fainting
• Nausea or vomiting
• Rapid heart rate

Uncontrolled heat exhaustion can evolve into heat stroke, so make sure to treat victims quickly:
• Move victims to a shaded or air-conditioned area
• Give water or other cool, nonalcoholic beverages
• Apply wet towels, or have victims take a cool shower

Heat Stroke
Seek medical help immediately if someone is suffering from heat stroke.
Signs include:
• Body temperature above 103 degrees
• Skin that is flushed, dry and hot to the touch; sweating has usually stopped
• Rapid breathing
• Headache, dizziness, confusion or other signs of altered mental status
• Irrational or belligerent behavior
• Convulsions or unresponsiveness

Immediately take action:
• Call 911
• Move the victim to a cool place
• Remove unnecessary clothing
• Immediately cool the victim, preferably by immersing up to the neck in cold
water (with the help of a second rescuer)
• If immersion in cold water is not possible, place the victim in a cold shower or
move to a cool area and cover as much of the body as possible with cold, wet
towels.
• Keep cooling until body temperature drops to 101 degrees
• Monitor the victim's breathing and be ready to give CPR if needed.

DO NOT:
• Force the victim to drink liquids
• Apply rubbing alcohol to the skin
• Allow victims to take pain relievers or salt tablets
