Weekend Wisdom: Fall UP

As always, the summer in Edmonton went by too fast. Warm nights, sunny days and the pace seems to slow down slightly for many. I enjoyed time on my patio with my wife, hosted friends and socialized with clients and business connections.

I must admit that I am not a fan of fall and winter. Cooler days and evenings and the anticipation of what's to come weather wise in latter October to early November. ❄️

Having said that, the focus and kick in my step from a business perspective gets elevated.

For many, Fall may be viewed as a time of winding down. The days shorten, the air cools, and summer’s leisure feels like it’s slipping away. But what if we reframed this season not as a slowdown, but as a powerful opportunity to “Fall UP”—a time to rise, accelerate, and bring renewed energy into our professional and personal lives?

Summer is often marked by relaxation, travel, and lighter schedules. That reset is valuable, but momentum requires re-engagement. Fall is the perfect moment to channel fresh focus. Kids return to school, organizations reset Q4 targets, and clients sharpen their priorities heading into calendar year-end. Rather than easing into the season, leaders and professionals who “Fall UP” lean into this rhythm, using the structure and urgency of fall to drive results.
This mindset matters. If you enter Fall with complacency, you risk losing the gains of summer reflection. But if you embrace fall as a launching pad, you leverage clarity, discipline, and urgency to build momentum when others hesitate. In practical terms, it might mean recommitting to strategic goals, sharpening business development efforts, or investing in personal growth.

The Fall harvest is a fitting metaphor: you reap what you’ve planted. Summer offered time to recharge; now fall demands action. Those who “Fall UP” don’t just adapt to the season—they elevate because of it. The result is greater progress, renewed drive, and a strong finish to the year.

Let's turn Fall into Your Season of Momentum

Weekend Wisdom: Reality Check

A reality check can be defined as:
“An occasion or point in time that causes someone to consider the true situation or facts, and to discard false beliefs or unrealistic expectations.”

In simpler terms, it’s a moment of clarity—a jolt of truth that challenges assumptions, cuts through denial, and brings us back to what’s real.

Over the Canada Day long weekend, my wife Bonita and I decided to take June 30th off and create a 4-day weekend. It was simple, intentional, and deeply rewarding. As we relaxed in our backyard, we found ourselves reflecting on the first half of 2025. Our personal reality check? We’ve made strong progress, we still have much to do—but we’re in a good place. And we’re grateful.

Reality checks are about seeing clearly. Sometimes, they remind us how fortunate we truly are. We often overlook our wins (our gains), our support systems, and our opportunities—because we’re too focused on what’s missing. Gratitude, fully embraced, is a powerful antidote to that mindset. It builds perspective, and it builds resilience.

At other times, the reflection is more confronting. The hard truth? We might be part of our own problem. (Rest assured I have been there many times before) Habits, mindset, and choices—whether conscious or not—can create barriers. Procrastination, avoidance, blame, and poor communication aren’t external forces. They’re internal patterns. And change begins with ownership.

In life and business, high performers don’t wait for reality to hit them—they self-audit. They ask:

*What part of this do I own?
*Am I being honest with myself?
*What would happen if I stopped making excuses?

Our weekend reflection was comforting—but most reality checks are not. Still, they’re necessary. The mirror doesn’t always show what we want—but it shows what we need. And that truth is the starting point for building something better.

Enjoy your weekend!

Weekend Wisdom: Alignment

It was a fast-paced week for me and once again a major theme emerged...."Alignment"

From a professional standpoint, this is what my X5 Management team and I help leaders and teams to achieve within their organizations.

"Alignment is the intentional process of ensuring that individuals or teams share a common understanding, direction, and commitment to a goal or outcome."

Alignment isn’t always about agreement—it’s about understanding. In business and in relationships, alignment creates the foundation for trust, clarity, and meaningful progress. Without it, even the best strategies or intentions fall apart in ex*****on.

In the boardroom or at the kitchen table, misalignment shows up the same way: missed expectations, broken communication, and recurring frustration. Why? Because we assume too much. We assume others see what we see, want what we want, or feel what we feel. But alignment can’t be assumed—it must be earned through conversation.
That begins with a simple principle: seek to understand. True alignment demands that we exchange perspectives, not just opinions. We must be receptive to what others are trying to express—not just with their words, but with their concerns, hopes, and priorities.

In business, alignment accelerates ex*****on. It allows teams to move in sync, even in chaos. In relationships, it deepens connection and diffuses conflict. But to get there, we must pause long enough to ask the hard questions:

*What do you need from me?
*What does success look like for you?
*Where are we not aligned right now?

The answers are where clarity lives. Alignment isn’t a one-time act—it’s a continuous process of checking in, listening, and adjusting.

If you want to move forward together—at work or in life—you have to stop walking ahead alone. Start aligning. Start listening. That’s where momentum begins.

Enjoy your weekend!

Weekend Wisdom: Imposter Syndrome

Like most weeks I seem to find a theme that emerges over the course of my work and interactions with leaders and teams. This past week was no exception.

Imposter Syndrome refers to the internal experience of believing that you’re not as competent or capable as others perceive you to be, despite evident success and accomplishments. Individuals experiencing it often feel like frauds who will eventually be exposed, attributing their success to luck or external factors rather than their own abilities.

The feelings associated with imposter syndrome typically include chronic self-doubt, anxiety about being discovered as a “fraud,” and a persistent fear of not living up to expectations. These thoughts can lead to over-preparation, perfectionism, and a reluctance to seek new opportunities due to a fear of failure or exposure. It can be mentally exhausting and hinder personal and professional growth if not addressed.

Why does it happen? Often, it stems from internalized expectations—thinking we must be perfect, know everything, or never fail. It’s also magnified in environments where comparison is constant and recognition is scarce. Left unchecked, it undermines confidence, blocks progress, and distorts reality.

The good news? It’s not permanent—and it’s not a reflection of your actual abilities. Imposter Syndrome loses power the moment you stop believing its story.

In my experience, the large majority of people that are faced with imposter syndrome are quite capable and competent. The more they believe that is true or the more that is reinforced by others, such as a coach or mentor, can make the world of difference.

By looking at your successes (Gains) more often, even if they are small, vs. always looking at the things that you haven't done or can't do (Gap) can make all the difference.

Enjoy your weekend!

Weekend Wisdom: Trust but Verify

As I journey through each week I continue to discover themes that emerge and in most cases that theme is the basis for Weekend Wisdom. This weekend is no exception.

I first heard of this phrase 5-6 years ago. At first glance, I wasn't sure that I liked the phrase. If you trust, why is there a need to verify? As time evolved, I have a much greater appreciate for the true meaning.

"Trust but verify" is a phrase popularized by Ronald Reagan, but its relevance in business, leadership, and life has only grown. FYI..Reagan famously used the phrase “Trust, but verify” during the Cold War era, specifically in the context of nuclear arms control negotiations with the Soviet Union.

Trust is the foundation of strong teams, partnerships, and personal relationships. It fosters autonomy, confidence, and speed. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: blind trust can lead to blind spots.

Should we always verify—even when we feel unconditional trust? In high-stakes environments or situations: YES. Not because we distrust people, but because we trust outcomes more when they’re backed by clarity and accountability.
Verification doesn’t mean micromanagement. It means setting up systems, processes, and feedback loops that allow performance and expectations to be aligned. It’s not about catching people off guard—it’s about ensuring the mission or important task stays on track.

“Trust but verify” can serve as a method for balancing trust with risk management, ensuring better outcomes, while increasing probability of success when uncertainty is part of the equation.

When done with respect, verifying builds deeper trust. It says: “This matters enough for both of us to stay accountable.”

✅ Leaders trust their teams—but still check the metrics.
✅ Partners trust each other—but still review the agreements.
✅ We trust ourselves—but still seek feedback and data.

Trust without verification is optimism. Trust with verification is leadership.

In a world moving at high speed, emotional intelligence isn’t just about how we feel—it’s how we manage that balance between belief and diligence.

Enjoy your weekend.....and Go Oilers! 🏒🏒

Weekend Wisdom: Keep On, Keeping On

When times get tough, most people slow down. Some stop. A few—Keep On, Keeping On.

I remember hearing the "Keep On, Keeping On" phrase many years ago while reading, THINK AND GROW RICH, by Napoleon Hill. (BTW....an incredible read, if you have never picked up the book).

Hill stated how many people quit at the first sign of defeat, and how successful individuals develop the habit of continuing in spite of difficulties.

From my perspective, this phrase, isn’t just motivational fluff. It’s a mindset—a declaration that no matter the challenge, you won’t back down. You’ll keep pushing forward. You’ll keep showing up. You’ll keep doing the work even when the results are slow, the road is unclear, and the motivation feels thin.

In business, life, and sports there are seasons when grit matters more than strategy. When resilience outperforms brilliance. When progress isn’t a breakthrough—it’s just not quitting. (Way to go Edmonton Oilers!) 🏒

We don’t control every outcome. We do control our persistence. And that’s where real transformation lives—not in the easy days, but in the disciplined march up the hill, through uncertainty.

So if you’re tired, discouraged, or deep in the grind, remember this:

✅ Momentum builds through consistency.

✅ Breakthroughs are often one push beyond burnout.

✅ Strength is forged in the stretch—not the comfort.

Keep On, Keeping On......because sometimes the only difference between success and surrender is the decision to take one more step.

Weekend Wisdom: Don't Focus on the Noise

Earlier this week I attended a leader's conference of a valued-client. One of the senior executive shared a message that really impacted me. He stated, with all that is going on in the world, "don't focus on the noise."

The reality is, we live in a world of nonstop inputs—news cycles, politics, social media chatter, opinion overload, and many other distractions. The volume is deafening, and if we’re not careful, it drowns out what truly matters.

As leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals, our greatest risk isn’t a lack of information—it’s too much of it. The real threat is distraction disguised as relevance.

We tell ourselves, “I need to stay informed.” But what we often do is consume everything, process nothing, and lose clarity in the noise. The result? Overwhelm, anxiety, and scattered ex*****on.

The antidote: Intentional Focus.
🔹 Turn off the news for a week.
🔹 Unfollow sources that add stress, not value.
🔹 Replace reactive scrolling with intentional learning.
🔹 Block time each day for quiet, undistracted thought.

Focus is a competitive advantage. Blocking out the noise doesn’t make you uninformed—it makes you strategic. It allows you to protect your energy, sharpen your decision-making, and lead with purpose rather than panic.

Clarity doesn’t come from consuming more—it comes from choosing what (and who) you allow into your mental space.

In a world addicted to volume, silence can be a strength.

Greetings from beautiful Victoria, British Columbia.

Weekend Wisdom: No Excuses

Whether it was my upbringing or core values, I have never been a fan of excuses, be it from me or someone else.
An excuse is a justification we use to avoid action, responsibility, deflect accountability, or protect ourselves from the discomfort of failure or inaction.
Excuses are the stories we tell ourselves to feel better about standing still.

In life and in business, the truth is simple: results and actions matter—excuses don’t. Whether it’s your health, your relationships, your career, or your company, the minute you start justifying poor actions, or inaction, you start compromising progress.
We’ve all said it: “I’m too busy.” “It’s not the right time.” “Someone else should have stepped up.” "I was stressed when I said that." Those are justification statements.

A No Excuses mindset isn’t about being harsh—it’s about being honest. It’s about owning your role in every outcome, good or bad. It’s not blaming—it’s claiming. Claiming the power to change, to adapt, to do better next time.

In business, this mindset builds trust, clarity, and performance. In life, it builds character, resilience, and fulfillment. The most successful people—personally and professionally—don’t outsource accountability. They own it.

Next time something doesn’t go your way, resist the urge to explain it away.

Instead, ask:
✅ What was within my control?
✅ What will I do differently next time?
✅ What lesson am I avoiding by making this excuse?

If you want to grow your business, your leadership, or your life—ditch the excuses. Own the outcome.

Weekend Wisdom: Compartmentalize

My dear friend and mentor Arnold McLaughlin shared this advice with me 20 years ago and it has been an invaluable lesson and one that I still practice today.

In the chaos of leading a business, dealing with high-stakes decisions, and navigating personal pressures, the ability to compartmentalize isn’t just helpful—it’s mission critical.

Compartmentalization is the mental discipline of parking emotionally charged or complex issues—without ignoring them—so you can focus on what needs your full cognitive firepower right now. "File it away" on a temporary basis.

It’s not denial. It’s tactical prioritization.
The brain doesn’t perform well when it’s juggling high-stress distractions. Stress hijacks our mental capacity —logic, decision-making, and strategic thinking. When everything is urgent, nothing is effective. Leaders who fail to compartmentalize often find themselves reacting emotionally, burning out, or worse—making poor calls under pressure.

Here’s the shift: it’s not about suppressing reality, it’s about managing sequence. You can acknowledge the weight of a situation, park it mentally, or physically, and return to it when the time is right.

I have learned that this is how elite performers operate under pressure. Fighter pilots, athletes, ER doctors, CEOs—they don’t have the luxury of emotional overload mid-mission.

Action step: When stress hits, ask yourself, “Can I do anything about this right now?” If not, deliberately set it aside. Create a system—write it down, file it away, time-box it, and then come back to it intentionally.

Strong leaders don’t think about everything at once. They think about the right thing at the right time.

Is Your Business Ready for the Future?

Succession planning isn’t just about preparing for leadership transitions—it’s about future-proofing your business. Too often, organizations wait until a key leader steps away or an unexpected change occurs before addressing succession. By then, it’s a scramble rather than a strategy.

A strong succession plan ensures business continuity, strengthens leadership development, and aligns teams toward shared goals long before a crisis arises.

It’s about identifying and nurturing future leaders, building resilience within your organization, and creating a roadmap for long-term success.

The question is: Are you prepared?

If your business hasn’t taken proactive steps in succession planning, now is the time. Whether you’re a growing business or an established organization, ensuring leadership continuity is a critical investment.

Let’s start the conversation. If we can support you and your business in creating a strategic succession plan, reach out to us at [email protected]
