What exactly is workplace bullying?

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety defines it as:

“A pattern of behaviour that intimidates, offends, degrades or humiliates a person or group. It’s the assertion of power through aggression.”

But in practice, workplace bullying is more than just overt aggression. It’s often subtle, sustained, and relational—manifesting through exclusion, manipulation, or the misuse of authority.

This behaviour is rarely a one-time event. It’s repeated, persistent, and frequently tied to a power imbalance, making it difficult for targets to come forward without fear of retaliation or further harm.

Leaders and employers must recognize that psychological safety isn’t optional, it’s foundational. And it doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built through:

✅ Comprehensive, trauma-informed training
✅ Clear, enforceable policies that move beyond checkboxes
✅ A workplace culture that centers dignity, equity, and respect

When left unaddressed, bullying corrodes trust, disrupts productivity, and undermines organizational health.

As we observe Emergency Preparedness Week, it's crucial to recognize that emergencies aren't limited to natural disasters. Workplace conflicts, when left unaddressed, can escalate into violent incidents, posing significant risks to employee safety and organizational well-being.

Workplace de-escalation training is essential for fostering safe and respectful environments. However, certain Canadian industries remain underserved in this area. Recent data highlights the need for targeted training initiatives:

▫️Healthcare Sector: Workers in health occupations report the highest instances of workplace harassment, including verbal abuse and physical violence. Women in this sector are particularly affected, with 19% reporting harassment in the past year. (Statistics Canada)
▫️Young Workers in High-Risk Occupations: Youth aged 15–24 are at a heightened risk of occupational injury. Despite this, there is a lack of comprehensive de-escalation training tailored to young workers in trades, primary industries, and service jobs. (Government of Canada)
▫️Temporary and Precarious Workers: Temporary employees, who often lack union representation, may not receive adequate training on handling workplace conflicts, leaving them vulnerable to harassment and violence. (Government of Canada)

Addressing these gaps is crucial for ensuring all workers have the tools to manage and de-escalate conflicts effectively.

Is your industry equipped to handle workplace conflicts? Partner with Veritas Solutions to implement effective de-escalation training and enhance your emergency preparedness strategy. ⬇️

This Mental Health Week (May 5–11), the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) invites us to Unmask Mental Health—encouraging individuals and organizations to break down the barriers of stigma and foster environments where mental well-being is openly discussed and supported.

The Current Landscape:

▫️ Burnout is prevalent: 35% of employed Canadians report experiencing burnout, with rates soaring to 66% among nurses. (Mental Health Research Canada)
▫️ Workplace psychological safety is lacking: While 68% of employees consider their workplace psychologically safe, 23% do not, highlighting a significant area for improvement. (Mental Health Research Canada)
▫️ Mental health impacts productivity: Approximately 500,000 Canadians miss work each week due to mental health issues, costing the economy an estimated $51 billion annually. (CPA.ca)

By taking these steps, organizations can create a culture where employees feel safe to unmask their true selves, leading to increased engagement, productivity, and overall well-being.
