If your Canadian work permit is expiring soon, the best time to start thinking about what comes next isn’t the week before it expires.

Your current immigration status, type of work permit, employment situation and long-term plans can all affect the options available to you. And depending on your circumstances, there may be important steps or deadlines to consider well before that expiry date.

IRCC recommends applying to extend a work permit at least 30 days before it expires. In eligible situations, applying before your current permit expires may also allow you to maintain your status in Canada while IRCC processes your application.

If you’re already working in Canada and have been thinking about upgrading your skills, getting additional training or working toward licensing, this update may give you more flexibility to do it.
Eligible work permit holders may now be able to study for up to six months without applying for a separate study permit, or until their current work permit expires, whichever comes first.
This could be especially helpful for temporary workers looking to complete short-term education or training while continuing to work in Canada.
The temporary measure is in effect until December 31, 2027, but it’s important to know that it doesn’t apply to everyone and full-time studies will still require a study permit.
It’s also not a new immigration pathway. It’s meant to give eligible workers who are already in Canada more opportunities to develop skills that may be needed in the Canadian workforce.

Major immigration update.
It appears that IRCC has begun revoking previously approved Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWPs) issued to graduates of the CIOT Calgary–Portage College partnership.
This development has raised serious concerns among affected graduates, many of whom made significant educational and financial decisions based on the expectation that they were eligible to work in Canada after graduation.
