In 2022, Canada achieved a new record by welcoming approximately 437,000 new permanent residents. Immigration has been the primary source of population growth in Canada, with more than 8.3 million people, or almost one-quarter of the population, being landed immigrants or permanent residents. This proportion is the highest among the G7 countries and the largest since Confederation. The share of the Canadian population that is of working age is decreasing, and recent immigrants between the ages of 25 and 54 have been instrumental in rejuvenating the population. To improve client service, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has been taking various measures such as digitizing applications, hiring and training new staff, and leveraging automation technologies to increase processing capacity and efficiency while ensuring the safety and security of Canadians.
