I am the proud owner of a local business in Tors Cove called Canine The Natural Way Inc. Starting my own business was both exciting and overwhelming and I quickly realized I needed help. CBDC Celtic in Ferryland was exactly the help I needed to make my dream a reality.
I decided it was time to make a career change, so I followed my heart and began my journey to start my own canine business. I met with my Self-Employment Assistance (SEA) development officer at CBDC Celtic several times and she helped me focus and fine tune what I wanted and what would be feasible and successful. I cannot emphasize what a wonderful service this is. It was so empowering to speak with people who were kind, patient and very knowledgeable.
I was lucky to have been given a fighting chance by being in the SEA program and I could not have been successful without it. It gave me enough monthly income to get my business started. I was required to complete monthly reports of income and expenses. It really helped me pinpoint what products and type of market I wanted to focus on and ultimately be successful in.
There are many hurdles and obstacles to overcome when starting a business on your own and for the first time. My assigned SEA development officer was a wealth of knowledge, really cared and truly wanted to help me to succeed. We chatted many times and I had many questions. All these questions were met with patience and professionalism.
Would I recommend CBDC and the SEA program? 100% yes! The task of starting my own business was a lot more detailed than I had initially thought. From product demand to location, from product price to profit margins, these are all aspects I hadn't even thought of. Needless to say, their insight was a tremendous asset on start-up and the year following.
I'm very proud to say my business has been a success and continues to grow. As a canine nutritionist and clinical herbalist, I offer a variety of services including phone consultations, custom proactive home cooked recipes, therapeutic diet plans and individualized herbal protocols for dogs with health conditions. My product line includes powdered herbal supplements, natural skin, paw and ear care remedies and a flea/tick/mosquito repellant, seal oil and toothpaste.
