🚨 When Is It an Emergency?

Not every generator alert requires emergency service—but some situations do.

Here is a quick guide on what your generator is trying to tell you and ways to help determine your next step:

🔴 You have utility power, but your generator has a red light.
Your home is still receiving power from the utility. While the generator should be inspected, this is generally not an after-hours emergency. Please contact our office during regular business hours to schedule service.

🔴 Your utility power is OUT and your generator is not running. Your home is without backup power. This is considered an emergency. Please contact our office during business hours, or our emergency on-call technician after hours for assistance.

🟡 Yellow or Half Yellow/Half Green Light?
This is simply a maintenance reminder indicating your generator is due for its annual service. It does not indicate a generator fault. If you are on an existing maintenance plan our office will schedule your service accordingly. If you are not on an existing plan, contact our office to schedule.

🟢 Green Light - Your generator is ready to run for when you need it!

If you're ever unsure what your generator is telling you, don't hesitate to give us a call. We're always happy to help you determine the next steps.

⚡ Generator Education Week – Part #5 🔧 Service and Long-Term Support

Installing a generator is only the beginning. A standby power system is a long-term investment. Before making a purchasing decision, ensure the company can meet and exceed industry standards for:

✔ Preventative maintenance
✔ Emergency service when needed
✔ Warranty Service
✔ Technical Support

Look for companies with:

✔ Years of proven experience
✔ Qualified and experienced technicians
✔ Fully stocked service vehicles designed to minimize return visits
✔ Ongoing manufacturer training and certification updates
✔Companies that specialize in Standby Power Systems as their primary business focus. Not a secondary or subsidiary business.

The quality of service after installation is just as important as the installation itself. A dependable service provider helps ensure your standby power system remains reliable and ready for when you need it the most.

We are frequently contacted by homeowners whose standby power systems were installed by other companies. Common questions we hear include:

❓ "Why didn't they tell me this?"
❓ "How can they sell something they seem to know nothing about?"

Before making your decision, do your research.
✔ Is the company consistently rated highly on Google and other review platforms?
✔ Are they recognized by the manufacturers they represent?
✔ Do they have a proven track record of customer satisfaction?

Just because a company is listed as the largest business in the country, doesn’t mean that they are the better installer. It just means they have larger warehouses.

Experience, expertise, and long-term support are what truly matter when choosing a standby power provider.

⚡ Generator Education Week – Part #4 ⚠️ Be Cautious of Unrealistic Discounts

If one company is offering pricing that is significantly lower than a comparable quotation, it is worth asking why.

A properly installed standby power system involves far more than the generator itself. Labour, permits, materials, commissioning, and installation are only part of the overall project cost. Companies must also invest in insurance, training, inventory, service vehicles, office staff, warranty support, and ongoing customer service to properly support customers long after the installation is complete.

If a contractor is offering to "take" $1,500 off a competing comparable quotation, homeowners should carefully evaluate what may be missing from the proposal.

Questions worth asking include:

✔ Are permits included?
✔ Is all labour included?
✔ Are all required materials included?
✔ Who will perform the installation?
✔ What level of warranty and service support is provided after installation?
✔ Will the company be there to support the system years from now?

The difference may not be in the generator itself—it may be in the materials, labour, workmanship quality, service support, and long-term stability of the company standing behind the installation.

When comparing quotations, remember that value extends beyond the initial purchase price. In the standby power industry, you often get what you pay for.

🌧️ Monday Maintenance Tip

After heavy rain or storms, inspect your generator area for:

✔️ Standing water
✔️ Mud buildup
✔️ Fallen branches
✔️ Blocked vents

Keeping the area clear helps prevent future problems.

⚡ Generator Education Week – Part #3 💲 Understanding the Cost of a Standby Generator

When comparing generator quotes, remember that you're not simply purchasing equipment. A complete standby power installation often includes:

✔ Site consultation
✔ Installation labour
✔ Permits
✔ Commissioning and testing
✔ Electrical work
✔ Fuel connections
✔ Equipment
✔ Warranty support
✔ Long-term service support

Whenever possible, all work should be performed by the company providing the quotation. This promotes accountability, consistent quality standards, and proper adherence to electrical and safety codes throughout the project.

Homeowners should also ask whether portions of the installation will be subcontracted.

Subcontracting can sometimes lead to inconsistencies in workmanship, quality control, and installation knowledge. Installers working on fixed-price or piecework arrangements are incentivized to complete jobs quickly, increasing the risk of installation errors, code violations, or insufficient attention to detail.

By choosing a company that manages the entire process—from consultation and installation to ongoing maintenance and service—you benefit from clear responsibility, experienced technicians, and reliable support for years to come.

A standby power system is a long-term investment. When comparing quotations, make sure you're evaluating the complete package—not just the price of the generator itself.

⚡ Generator Education Week - Part #2 👷 Who Should Be Installing Your Generator?

A site visit should be conducted by an experienced professional who possesses the appropriate licences, certifications, and technical expertise required for standby power system installations.

Look for installers who are knowledgeable about ESA and TSSA requirements and who maintain manufacturer training and certifications, such as those offered by Generac and other leading equipment manufacturers.

When choosing an installer, ask about:

✔ Factory training
✔ Industry certifications
✔ ESA knowledge
✔ TSSA licensing
✔ Experience with standby power systems

The person conducting your consultation should be capable of answering technical questions and explaining the installation process—not simply delivering a sales presentation.

Knowledge and experience matter.

The right installer will help ensure your system is safe, compliant, and properly sized for your home's needs.

🐝🧰 Monday Maintenance Tip

Warmer weather brings more than storms — it also brings insects.

Help prevent 🐝 bees and wasps from nesting inside your Generac generator by safely spraying around the unit and opening the generator to remove any nests or debris you find.

Regular preventative maintenance can help keep your generator protected and ready when you need it most.

⚡ Generator Education Week – Part #1 🏡 Why a Site Visit Matters

One of the most important things to consider when purchasing a home standby generator is receiving a firm installation quote without anyone visiting your property.

A professional site visit benefits both the homeowner and the installer by ensuring the installation is located safely, correctly, and in compliance with all applicable regulations.

During the site visit, the installer should:

 Discuss the preferred generator location
 Take accurate site measurements
 Explain generator placement and required clearances
 Review safety, accessibility, ventilation, and maintenance requirements
 Identify and potential installation challenges before work begins.

The installer should also explain why specific clearances and installation requirements exist and how they ensure compliance with:

• Manufacturer installation guidelines
• Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) requirements
• Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) requirements
• Local municipal by-laws and building regulations
• Industry best practices for safety and reliability

Proper planning is the foundation of every successful generator installation.

If a company is willing to provide a firm quote without seeing your property, that should be considered a significant red flag. 🚩

❓Ask yourself: What important details might they be missing?

💬 At Miskow Generators & Electric, every consultation begins with a real conversation. We do not use AI for scheduling appointments, answering phone calls, or preparing installation estimates. We believe every homeowner deserves personal service from start to finish.
