🚑 First Aid Availability in BC – Are You Actually Compliant?

I occasionally see worksites with a medic on site, but located 15–30 minutes away from workers. In many cases, this does not meet the legal requirements under the regulation, depending on the first aid assessment and site conditions.

Under WorkSafeBC OHS Regulation, Part 3 – First Aid (Section 3.16), employers must ensure prompt first aid is available.

The OHS guideline G3.18(2) clarifies what this means:

First aid must be within 10 minutes of workers OR
A first aid attendant must be able to reach the worker within 10 minutes.

⚠️ In practice:

If your medic is 15–30 minutes away, your setup likely does not meet the intent of the regulation. It’s not just about having a medic, it’s about how quickly care can be provided.

In a serious incident, delays in first aid can significantly impact outcomes, including the potential for life-threatening consequences. Beyond the impact to the worker, there can also be serious implications for the company. Taking the time to ensure your first aid coverage meets requirements helps protect both your workers and your organization.

🚨 WHMIS 2025 Updates: What You Need to Know Before December 14, 2025

Canada is updating WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) to align with the latest Globally Harmonized System (GHS). The compliance deadline is December 14, 2025.

These changes are designed to improve hazard communication and bring greater consistency to labels, Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), and worker training across Canada.

🔍 Key Updates

New hazard classes and categories, including a new “chemicals under pressure” class, new categories for non-flammable aerosols, and revised definitions for flammable and pyrophoric gases.

Enhanced SDS and label requirements. Suppliers must include more detailed physical and chemical properties and update hazard classifications.

Full disclosure of ingredients. All hazardous ingredients above cutoff levels must now be disclosed, even if they don’t directly drive classification.

Improved consistency. Clearer signal words and precautionary statements mean a more standardized approach to hazard communication nationwide.

✅ What You Need to Do

Suppliers: Review and update all classifications, SDSs, and labels to meet the new Hazardous Products Regulations (HPR) by December 14, 2025.

Employers: Obtain updated copies of SDSs and replace outdated versions. Update your WHMIS training, programs, and site-specific procedures to reflect the new classes and labeling requirements.

Workers: Familiarize yourself with the new SDS and label formats, more than 90% of SDSs are expected to change.

WorkSafeBC Regulation 11.3 Fall Protection Plan states "Employers must have a written fall protection plan for a workplace if work is being done at a location where workers are not protected by permanent guardrails, and from which a fall of 7.5 meters (25ft) or more may occur. The fall protection plan must be available at the workplace before work with a risk of falling begins.”. The WorkSafeBC website provides employers with a helpful Fall Protection Plan fillable template, see link below. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

The Government of B.C. has announced changes to the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation relating to flushable toilets on construction sites, coming into effect on October 1, 2024. Under these requirements, employers at construction sites with 25 or more workers must provide flush toilets, handwashing facilities, and clean bathrooms.

Construction workers can soon say goodbye to unsanitary portable toilets on most construction sites and say hello to cleaner flush toilets.
