🍂 Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Taproot!

We are grateful for our incredible team, the individuals and families who trust us, and the community partners we have the privilege of working alongside.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving, we also acknowledge the Indigenous Peoples whose lands we live and work on, and recognize the importance of honouring their histories, cultures, and ongoing contributions to our communities.

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

It is a day to honour Survivors, their families and communities, and to remember the children who never returned home.

It is also an opportunity to return to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action.

The Calls remind us that reconciliation is not only something for governments to address. There are Calls directed toward health care, education, businesses, professionals, institutions, and the broader Canadian public.

At 🌱 Taproot, our work brings us into systems that support children, adults, families, and communities. That makes continued learning about the history and ongoing impacts of colonialism, and reflecting on our responsibilities within those systems, important.

Today, we encourage you to read the Calls to Action themselves and consider which ones intersect with your own work and community.

Truth comes before reconciliation. Action must follow.

Back in June, Ashley Kingston and Amanda Saulnier of 🌱Taproot, along with fellow BCBA Emily Forestell (gnb) donated time to speak at the Jobs Unlimited professional development conference. The topic was positive behaviour supports and task analysis.

The Jobs Unlimited team was a terrific audience. They were fun and engaged and so committed to doing their best for their clients!

When an organization encounters barriers, it's easy to focus on the people closest to the problem. Leaders often think that staff need more training, need to be held accountable, or just need to do their jobs.

Sometimes that's true, but behaviour doesn't happen in isolation. Every behaviour occurs within a system.
As behaviour analysts, we're taught to look beyond the individual. The same principle applies in organizations.

Before asking, "How do we change our staff?" We think leaders should also ask:

• Are we aligned?
• Are expectations clear?
• What behaviours are we reinforcing?
• What barriers have we unintentionally created?

The most effective leaders we've worked with don't rush to blame. They stay curious; they examine the system, not just the performer.

That's often where meaningful change begins.
